1863 Ferreira vintage port

Dark gold in colour, with a pale yellow rim and just a hint of green. Initial impact on the nose is a massive wave of VA, very reminiscent of a bual madeira, which was consistent with the colour! Underneath the VA was a little rosemary, antiseptic and perhaps some sweetened gooseberry. In the mouth ...

25 May 2010, somewhere north of Henley, a blind tasting

On 25th May, work caused me to be in the northern suburbs of Henley Upon Thames and Derek kindly agreed to meet up and share some port. In total, 5 of us met at Rowley's Restaurant in Baslow and enjoyed a thoroughly nice evening with great service (thanks Abbey!) good food and some interesting learn...

Re: Favorite low to mid-priced vintage - what's yours?

Pity we can't talk about LBV as well as vintage - Croft 2004 Unfiltered for £12 a bottle today and £3 per half bottle at Christmas. Eira Velha 2000 for $15 (but needs another 15 years) and 1997 $40 Fonseca Guimaraens 1988 for $30 and 1996 for $35 Most recent Crasto vintages Most recent Smith Woodhou...

Re: Noval Nacional 1931

Does anyone here know or suspect they have consumed a counterfeit bottle? I (along with Julian, Andy, Alex, and Roy) opened a fake Croft vintage from the 30's that wasn't even a declared vintage for a vertical we held in Boston a couple of years ago. Had a copied Croft looking label and I think a t...

Re: 19 May 2010, The Bowler, 1960 Horizontal

I thoroughly enjoyed the evening, very much for the company rather than the wines which I think Chris described very accurately as "meh". Drinkable and acceptable but certainly not ones to add to the cellar at £120+ per bottle. However, it was great to see Gustavo and Oscar again and a rea...

Re: Fiftieth Anniversary - Wednesday 19th May

Latest update: Heathrow airspace was closed between 1am and 7am, but is expected to reopen at 7am and is not expected to close again in the near future. Flights in and out of Heathrow may have to follow an unusual routing. On the positive side, I have to meet a flight from Dallas that left last nigh...

Getting really nervous about the damned volcano. I'm still in San Francisco, hoping to fly out tomorrow night. Flights tonight are cancelled... :( Fingers crossed, keytohwy The latest forecast says that even tomorrow, Heathrow and Manchester are likely to be operating and certainly by Tuesday the m...

Re: 1890 AJ da Silva colheita port

Are you sure? AJS might also have been Andrew James Symington?

Roy also refers to it as both AJS Da Silva and AJ Da Silva.

Any Idea who has the bottle, or was it one of the bottles you photographed?

Re: June Offline 14th June- Crusting Pipe - 1982 horicontal

Annoyingly, I was putting this date in the family diary and realised that it is the week that Elizabeth is away on the school residential trip. I am therefore the parent in charge for a week and can't be late back from London. Sorry, I will have to bow out unless we can move the date back a week to ...

Re: June Offline 14th June- Crusting Pipe - 1982 horicontal

A thought has just occurred to me. The Crusting Pipe becomes very warm as a venue in the summer. Last year we found that the warmth of the location in the height of the summer affected some of the ports quite badly, with them becoming very alcoholic. We overcame this with some ice buckets to keep te...

I can make either date, but would prefer Monday 14th.

I would have to adopt, the only 1982 vintage port. Is anyone willing to offer something for adoption?

1975 Delaforce

From magnum; decanted off very little, sludgy sediment. Pale auburn in colour, with a rose rim. Floral honey on the nose, pleasant but not strong. Dusty sweet redcurrant jelly on the tongue, with the tannins showing through as a gentle dusty persistence. Floral and rose-water flavours in the mouth, ...

Re: The Christmas offline 2010

I'm in.

Does the fact that Chris is game mean that we can shoot him on August 12?

Can we reserve a couple of spots for guests who would not normally attend our offlines? Last year the fact we did this meant that Rute and Joao were able to join us.

The venue for the tasting is The Bowler, 32 Bowling Green Lane, Clerkenwell, London EC1R 0BJ, +44 20 7837 8340. We have a reservation from 18:30. I suggest that we aim to arrive for a 7pm start. We'll start with dinner and follow that with the offline, no doubt we will drink some of the ports with t...

Mature red in colour, showing the red / brown mix of maturity. Similar nose to the Warre 1970 shown alongside, but not as well developed; slightly hot, with All Spice and cherries. Slightly sweet entry, then full of dry cherries. Quite harsh on the sides of the tongue; joy, but with ripe cherry frui...

Russet brown, with a very light centre and a pale rim; looking as though it will be in its tertiary phase. Alcoholic on the nose, with a hint of rubber. Toffees all over the entry, then sweet redcurrant and some dryness on the edge of the tongue. Spicy acidity and lots of honey flavours on the palat...

Dark red, very young, opaque centre and deeply coloured rim. Loud blackcurrants all over the nose. Big, sweet and fruity in the mouth; so full of fruit that the peppery tannins are almost hidden. Sweet, deep blackcurrants on the aftertaste; long and lingering but not big in flavour. Soft and approac...
