Re: The 2014 Harvest

I crossed the Spain-Portugal border yesterday and spent the whole day cycling south through Braganca, Mirandela and Vila Flor in horrible rain storms, though there looked like there may be sunshine to the South. Am posting this from Pocinho, where there has definitely been substantial rain overnight...

Re: Terroir and Port

For 2000, 2003 and 2007 (maybe others, but those I know) both a Cockburn's and a Quinta dos Canais were made. Also Martinez in each of those years. Might be interesting to line up and taste. There are a few older ones, too. Taylor and Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas 1970 (albeit the latter was a bit o...

Re: The Scottish Independence Referendum, 18th Sept 2014

It has been interesting watching this from Spain over the last couple of weeks, where the referendum and it's implications for Spanish domestic politics suddenly caught a lot of national media attention, as well as following the impassioned social media debates of London-based Scots who have not act...

Re: Tappit hen

On reflection, I think saying 'is a Tappit Hen 2.1L or 2.25L?' is only an extension of saying 'is a bottle 70cL or 75cL?' Has AHB tried filling one of his empty tappit hens with water to the original fill line to determine the actual capacity? I must admit that whenever I've done this with a port m...

Re: 2014 pre-Harvest Tour tasting, London, 9/23

Apologies - i haven't been checking the board while on sabbatical so didn't see the questions coming my way. And double apologies - particularly to Glenn - as rain / bike breakages in the Pyrenees means that I am so far behind schedule that I have had to change my flight back and will now miss this ...

In B, c, f and h you have the pairing listed the wrong way round - the 63 was the first port of the pair.

Re: Wed 23 Apr 2014, The Bung Hole: 1960 versus 1963

First post amended to add letters. Somebody please check. Two conclusions. • Whoever did the mess-up should recuse himself from such activities in the future. • We should be less ambitious about our ability to self-blind. The more complicated the required self-blinding, the more steps must be done ...

Re: Wed 23 Apr 2014, The Bung Hole: 1960 versus 1963

Due to the mis-pairing, the relative 60-63 scores that were initially taken for each pairing were unfortunately compromised. But there were some interesting scores from the WOTN voting (ex-scores from WS1 and Kevin). Scoring was the usual 6 point system (with no more than 3 points per port no less t...

I think this was the line-up (note that the As and Es are not matching shippers, which was how it was revealed on the night): A roman -> W60 A italic -> D60 B roman -> F63 B italic -> F60 C roman -> S63 C italic -> S60 D roman -> T63 D italic -> T60 E roman -> D63 E italic -> W63 F roman -> G63 F i...

Re: Small 1966 Horizontal on 22 of April

In view of number of people: - is it worth 2 flights of 7 ports with second flight being poured by a couple of volunteers while others eat? Or fitting the fourteen 66 VPs onto 1 A3 sheet? - asking TBH to put the air conditioning on to full? (will also help if ports will sit in glass for a long time,...

Re: Selling Port

Tom, How do you fancy one last hangover? Perhaps your uncle could also join the fun? What you have presented to us looks like a very nice tasting of mature Vintage Port. If we saved the duplicates we would have 14 different Ports, which is just enough for 14 strong men in one sitting. We could even...

Re: Selling Port

A very interesting and well-picked little selection for drinking - however, I suspect its re-sale value will be far lower than the potential enjoyment it could bring, so slightly unfortunate that port no longer agrees with you! 1 x Dow's Vintage Port 1981 Presumably this one is "Late Bottled Vi...

I like this port - even for drinking in the short to mid-term (though perhaps the 98 is more ready right now). Plus it still seems to be available at such a crazy price in the UK - must be one of the best QPR ports in my cellar.

Re: 60 vs 63

Axel, Dirk, Tom and I are doing the decanting at my flat - Tom has sourced generic clean wine bottles and we have adequate bodies to ensure that port ends up in pairs that are blind to everyone but which have a safe audit trail to ensure identification at the end. So no need to worry!

Please confirm shippers and ordering thereof. • Who? People? • Please inspect carefully (carefully!) to verify everything. Shippers should be A1, A2, B1, B2 etc. x 8 pairs. See Tom's earlier post upthread. Not sure about people - in Tom's court - but could be: 1. EDN 2. THRA 3. THRA + 1 [RLC?] 4. R...
