Re: Seeking "The Authentic Colheita" experience...?
Have a look at this website . I must admit I've only come across this shop recently and haven't a clue about their reputation, but prices look much better than GN, so it's worth a try. As Glenn says, do inform about bottling dates, they should be a recent as possible and I certainly wouldn't buy any...

Great pictures, thanks for sharing Alex & Derek. I particularly enjoyed the shots of the race, although it hardly looked like spectacular sailing!

Re: Raiding Ronnie's cellar
There was a proper discussion of elderberry, its use and effects. That was more than fleetingly interrupted by planning the burglary of Ronnie’s cellar. Come on chaps, there is a difference. Which was only a very legitimate attempt of Derek to obtain what is difficult to get to since I moved to the...

Re: The colour of old Martinez
They are protected by a wall of Royal Oporto 1985 that you'd have to drink first. You will never make it. You will have left a way into the treasures, a trapdoor, a sliding panel. Derek knows your methods... The Force , young Padawan, irresistible will it be. RO85 is no obstacle, it is good for was...

Raiding Ronnie's cellar
This thread spawned from here . DRT. The above mentioned FG76. I have plenty bottles of it and am happy to share one if I'm ever in London again. That is very cruel given that you just moved to New Zealand :x Or, some of us could pop over to Amsterdam and taste it for you? Case tasting of FG...

Re: The colour of old Martinez
A number of us were told it drops color very quickly some years after being added to Port and turns a brownish color. It also gives it a weird taste as can be sampled in the 1976 Fonseca Guimaraens Those two sentences contradict one another. FG76 is as black as coal (with a brownish tinge). I would...

Re: Nacional 1991 - no notes, fellas?!
I haven't tasted the Nacional but I did taste all the other 1991 Noval bottlings, including the Quinta Roriz. Without an exception, they've all been incredibly weak, and this was 6-10 years ago. If I wanted to spend $400 on port, I'd spend it on something else.

The tone and content have become less educational and more promotional, alas. But surely this is purely educational! Charles explains that Six Grapes is so special that you only very rarely come across a wine of sufficient quality to make it. If you go looking for Six Grapes, you won’t find it: it ...

I have Ni 95, 96, 98, 01, 07 as well as a 97 Passadouro LBV.
Would be happy to share, but it will be a long term project, as it may well be only next year that we will be in the area again.

Re: Fair price for 1933 niepoort?
As old Niepoorts are so incredibly rare, there isn't a true market value to them. They basically go for what is asked. As such, I don't think $ 575 is a ridiculous price.

Re: Niepoort: Small changes in design and pricing
Just look at the back label of your Niepoort vintage ports (or the little card attached) and see that over the decades they made the same spelling error. Bonus points for the first one to find out. You must have different bottles from me, because mine pretty much have an error on every singl...

Re: Niepoort: Small changes in design and pricing
Niepoort, it seems, have also moved the bottling line from Porto to V. N. Gaia. The bottling line always was in VNdG, as Derek said first in the Niepoort lodge (and a tiny bottling line it was!), now with a bit more space in the former Osborne lodge. This change happened a couple of years ago. The ...

Re: Wed 08 Jan 2014, Blind, with Ronnie Roots
A great evening with old and new friends and a "new guest" that looked suspiciously like JDAW. An incredible mixed bag of ports, which made it a lot of fun to taste. I have mixed feelings about bringing the WOTN and the WWOTN. It's rather worrying that your duff bottle of D70 comes from th...

Re: 2011 Dow
Primary and big: aromas of crushed dark cherry and blackberry. Full on the palate, dominated by the same concentrated fruits as on the nose. This comes across as more linear than the F11 shown along side, but the purity and concentration of the fruit is so delicious it is impossible not to love this...

Re: 2011 Fonseca
Tight nose, very floral with extremely dark fruit. Incredibly enjoyable to drink already: floral, black cherry and blackberry, espresso and red chilli on the spicy finish. Tannic? Yes of course, but they are so ripe and well-integrated that the port has a very elegant and well-balanced feel. Impress...

Quite a youthful colour still, of medium intensity. Rather tight on the nose, revealing sweet dark cherries, dark chocolate and floral (violet) aromas. Very flavoursome: plum, fig, dark chocolate, some strawberries. Still youngish with noticeable tannins. Dry and spicy finish. Lovely drinking port t...

Re: 1958 Warre
Delicate nose of milk chocolate, marzipan and figs, with flavours of orange marmalade, almonds, hazelnuts and -again- milk chocolate. Tannins are fully resolved, and although it is soft, it still carries enough weight to feel alive. A nice surprise.

Re: 1994 Delaforce
Young in appearance and taste. A full nose dominated by blackberry and cherry, but slightly dusty (in a dried herb kind of way). Very dense, with flavours of sour cherry, blackcurrant, fig and coffee. Fairly tannic still, but they are ripe and dense. Quite surprisingly, it finishes rather sudden. I ...

Re: 1970 Kopke Sao Luiz
Very light and slightly dusty nose with some harsh alcohol. Much better on the palate which shows some dried fig, raisin, white chocolate and tea. Some sweet, slightly confected, red fruit as well. Finishes dry with some bitter almonds. A pleasant and light port, that gives the impression of gently ...

Re: 1960 Croft
Attractive nose of plum, half dried cherries and dried violets, together with some dark chocolate. On the palate: sweet figs and cherries, plum and a slightly peppery finish. Long finish. Very pleasant and surprisingly good port. It does go flat with prolonged time in the glass however.
