Re: Just discovering port
Hello and welcome. We like port drinkers, and encourage them to join us online and at tastings. We’re friendly and have yet to turn away any genuine enthusiast or student (except ‟turn away” in the sense that a bottle gives only fourteen tastings, so there are never more than fourteen ‘seats’). But...

Re: 1970 Fonseca
At 9pm, after a goodly selection of the works of Bachus, I return to the Fonseca 1970. ‟Tasty”, says a guest. Yes, but slightly too bitter, too astringent, to be perfect. But it is by that standard by which it is judged, and falls short. Great port: fruit, sugar, balance and length: the world is in...

1970 Fonseca
For what do the Americans give thanks? Of course, it is for the opportunity to open a Fonseca 1970. Opened at 11:30am, with the decanter-priming sample being very dark. This still looks young. There’s no blue, so not extremely youthful, but neither is there brown could easily be 19 years old rather ...

Re: To pay or not to pay, VAT is the question
But duty is a fixed price per bottle, whereas VAT is ad valorem. So if the numbers offset for an average-priced bottle, then a more expensive bottle will cheapen, albeit slightly.

Re: Port for sale by retailer
One day I will get to the pearly gates. Saint Peter himself will be holding them open: ‟no problem sir, we’ve handled the bureaucracy for you, and you’ve plenty of time we’re not starting for a few hours”. Of course we all know what will be starting then, but to allow the key-holding fisherman the ...

Re: Port for sale by retailer
How does one get on Benchmark Wine's Port mailing list? I have purchased from them twice, both times Port only, and somehow all they ever send me are their Bordeaux and other red wine listings. Being tall and handsome” with an English accent described as ‟buttery” has worked for me. What have you...
