Tom, I think I agree with everything you say but this leaves me wondering how it can be that a 50 year old bottle of port with a cork that is still intact and a plastic or wax capsule that has maintained a perfect seal can lose any level whatsoever, other than parhaps a minute amount due to absorbti...

OK, sorry, I thought you were talking about my Croft 63. Your question is one that I have pondered frequently. The common belief seems to be that a cork will "breathe" and let air in and out of the bottle in very small doses over a long period of time. I think, but cannot be sure, that the...

Line-up Question: Is this a blind tasting or a partially-sighted tasting? So far only the Roots have indicated that they will be bringing mystery wines. Others, including me, have declared what is on their possibles list. Can those who are attending please declare whether or not they wish to go blin...

Transport question: I will probably be traveling to London on the morning of 17th July, 36 hours before the commencement of the offline. As I see it I have 2 options for decanting: 1. Decant early morning on 17th July and hope the wine holds together for 36 hrs or 2. Carry the bottles (like you wou...

Alan, In an attempt to make you feel better I will tell a story about a bottle I once opened that had no cork in the neck  About 3 or 4 years ago I bought a couple of bottles of Croft 1963. This was for no other reason than someone had told me 1963 was a great year and Croft 1963 is reasonabl...

It looks like I will be in London on the nights of 17, 18 and 19 of July. 18th still suits me best for the offline but I could probably be persuaded to share a glass or two of port on either of the other 2 nights if anyone is around.

Alan, You are forgetting one very important detail. 99.9% of port bottles have some sort of wax/plastic/lead capsule which would make this method impossible :? If you can find a vendor or auctioneer who is willing to let you chip the 50+ year old capsule off a bottle of port to let you take a photo ...

I think I may have made this comment before but think it worth repeating here in response to AHB's note above. I think having too much standing content, like a FAQ's page, could have a negative effect in attracting new participants to the Forum. I appreciate that it can become slightly tiresome answ...

Hmmm?

I thought a diagonal tasting was a combination of horizontal and vertical tastings such as:

Fonseca 1963, 1966 & 1970
Graham's 1963, 1966 & 1970
Taylor's 1963, 1966 & 1970

If this isn't a diagonal tasing then what should we call it?

No problem, Ronnie - at £5 each I think I can spare one of the 2 dozen I have left  Derek Edit: On re-reading the above I realised that this may be interpreted as a request for £5 in exchange for the bottle. It isn't. The bottle will be a small gift for you and Lady Roots from the UK contingent

Perhaps your other bottle would make a good partner to the Cockburn's and Warre's 1960's I have been thinking of bringing along on the 18th?

Not all screens are the same. The one I am on now shows the entire forum whereas the one I use at work shows about 75% of the screen. It's all down to resolution. My suggestions are to do with avoiding underused titles rather than the size of the front page. Which, I agree, whould be as small as pos...

I think there are ways, but most, if not all, will cost money.

I think we need The B's to tell us if and when it becomes too much to cope with and what the options are for stopping it.

It is nteresting how this question has been interpreted. I went for 1966, being a "maturish" year that was my favourite year of the 4 listed. Others seem to have read "which is the most mature year of these 4?" KillerB, can you please explain the intent of the question (other tha...
