LBV Old and New - part 2

Another fascinating tasting took place at The Crusting Pipe on January 26th, which featured 9 different LBvs thanks to the generosity of Alex K who was the surprise appearance of the night. We had an academically interesting vertical of Taylor 1965, 1967, 1969 and 1979. The conclusion I came to was ...

Re: A Handbook of Wine - William J Todd

I find it fascinating to see that the effect of phyloxera, in the 1860s, set the industry back barely 20 years in volume terms and with a huge rate of recovery. Given how many moratorios are still visible in the Douro it is fascinating to speculate what happened to generate such a quick and substant...

Updated draft of the placemats . ”“SAW, ”“” , ”“â—Š, ”“•; +♥, +♣, +♦, +â™ . Please check carefully. JDAW - With the absence of SAW, my bottle has reverted back to being a Taylor 1967. Jacob - if you are happy and able to print, that would be most appreciated. All - I will be arriving around 7...

A Handbook of Wine - William J Todd

While in Cornwall over a long weekend I spent a few minutes browsing in a particularly good second hand bookshop that I know. I bought a copy of ‟A Handbook of Wine” by William J Todd, published by Jonathan Cape of Eleven Gower Street, London in 1922. William J Todd died in 1941, which means that t...

[I'm very happy with a Warre 1999 but would prefer something older than the 2004 Infantado, if that's possible - even if in half bottle. No problems; will dig out a couple of halves rather than the Infantado. Also, CHR would like to bring a +1 who was supposed to come to the ‟are we wasting our mon...

Re: LBV - Young and Old; London, 10th and 26th January 2011

Looking through my cellar it turns out I have some more LBVs from the 90s but most are in halves. If RAYC is bringing the Smith Woodhouse 1995, would it be acceptable if I bring a 1999 Warre and CHR brings a 2004 Quinta do Infantado to increase the number of younger LBVs? My preference would be to ...

Re: A birthday tasting 2011 - 4th April 2011

The largest :tpf: tasting yet was the 1970 Horizontal in January 2009 , weighing in at 35 bottles. The updated draft of placemats has 32 bottles: four more and we can set a new record. Surely we can’t refuse an opportunity like that. We need: Fonseca 2007, 2003, 1994, 1983, 1975 (yes, I know), 1955...

While placemats would be very welcome, full details will be difficult. Perhaps spaces for glasses denoted by people rather than by wines? The people are listed in this post on this thread.

Thanks.

Could I bring a guest to this tasting? Shaun (SAW) attended the 'Cold Turkey' event at The Bell and thoroughly enjoyed it, so he wants to get a bit more involved. He will no doubt need to adopt if this is acceptable. Shaun is most welcome. I believe that DRT said he had some LBVs available for adop...

Re: 1984 Dow's vintage port

I bought a case of Dow 1985 at retail (from Farr Vintners) last year and paid £420 for a case (duty paid) which had been in their storage facilities since shipping - so perfect conditions. I would expect to buy this at auction for about £340, which would translate to a net price to the seller after ...

i agree with the sentiment, but i wouldn't even begin to guess how the logistics would work for those people not in the immediate area. Do you ask th em to send a check? Re: Tasting Guidance: Decant Times

I would suggest 12 hours for all except the following:
1960 - 6 to 8 hours
1994 - 24 to 36 hours
2007 - 24 to 48 hours

And depending on how many of you are drinking that night, you might want to take home a sample bottle or two and post a tasting note on the port the following evening.

So far, I have been lucky with the offlines that I have organised and with one exception have always been able to fill any spaces left by last minute non-attendees. I have considered how to accommodate last minute drop-outs and came up with the following thoughts: (1) Where I am laying out a conside...

First draft of placemats . to tease DRT and JDAW1 into making this the most complete vertical ever achieved! So far, we are rubbish and will be going thirsty. I read this thread with a lot of amusement. While I thoroughly agree with the sentiment of what is written, I do so love Julian's style.
