Yeah, these clearly have risen after the bottling and encapsulation process was complete. There are no other signs of leakage -- in fact they are in rather pristine condition -- but i don't know how they were stored. They were sold by a reputable dealer (JJ Buckley, the warehouse half of WC), but i ...

Cooked?
How much cork protrusion would worry you?
I ask because the 1988 Taylor halfbottles from this thread arrived and 6 out of 9 have corks that are slightly raised (3-4 mm, enough to be noticable and to slightly bubble the capsule). They could go back, but it may not be worth it to ship them back.

Apparently Dovetail is getting a lot of press, it's appeared two weeks in a row with writeups in TimeOut NY, and the latest one cited it has received several 3 star ratings, including from the NYT (which is a big deal). Apparently they are swamped. Do we have a reservation there, yet? And for what t...

Re: Re decanter shape
The only thing I really vary is the time I allow it to stand before my target drinking time. Old wine gets a relatively short decant and young wine may get as much as 24 hours before I try it. That sounds like a break with other opinions here for 24-48 hrs of decanting... are there two schools of t...

Re decanter shape
Actually this was to be my next question (following the glasses one). What shapes are recommended? I have a couple of different decanters but favor the ship's decanter shape (giant, wide bottom) to the ovoid shape (more lightbulb-like). Meanwhile, there is something bizarrely appealing about the Eis...

Sherry lehman's got a new store, used to go all the time, i stopped buying ports there because they stand them upright and during the summer time the sales room was at least 80 degrees F. Though with their new store I'm not sure what they do now but I would imagine their older inventory that wasn't...

There definitely are, what are you looking for? I'm always on the look out and you can indeed from some really good 35-40$ bottles, or even LBV's that go down 20-30 range These days I'm trying to get a few more from the 80s, but i am tempted by good prices of any vintage :) There's a shop near me (...

Ok, so if i come upon some of this, I'm going to try bringing it to a party populated with rose' lovers and see what happens. By the way, Derek, the explanation provided for your experience with the pressurized cork is very odd. When you sealed the air in the bottle, it was likely at room temperatur...

Well then, what about 88 Taylor qdVargellas? Because I just won 6 half-bottles in a WC auction, and now they're offering me another 17 at $21 each. (personally i think its a bit overpriced at 21 -- i was willing to pay that for a few bottles but if i'm buying that much of the stuff, there ought to b...

More about Seapage
I found posts like this Vesuvio94 Leaker but i was wondering -- more generally -- would you buy a wine with clear evidence of leaking? How would size of bottle (375, 750, 1.5), age of wine (3 yrs vs 20+ yrs), or known quality affect how much you'd risk spending for a leaker? How would you store it (...

normally Colheitas should be drunk when bottled. Really? The port trade makes a big deal about buying a bottle of Colheita from your/kid's birth years and putting it away for many years to be opened on some celebratory occasion. I've only one, and had no opportunity to try any, but that's certainly...

SushiNorth: do you strongly prefer the Warre? Actually, I genuinely meant that as a question :) I have one bottle of Warre77 stashed away, and while I'm curious to get a peak at how those are tasting, I also realize that I haven't any Grahams til 2000 so it would be equally fun to see how they age.

For those who rarely drink non-VP it might also be fun to have an event that incorporates the entire range of ports from one or more shippers. I do this a lot with my Sake tastings; average to amazing from the same brewer/house. I think these are great ways to educate folks who are new to port, and...
