Re: Tues 5 May, The Best of the Fonseca Bicentennial Tasting
I've been rather absent of late, but this caught my eye and if the planets align (meaning I am granted a pass and a space at the table remains!) I would love to join you! You're in! Pass permitting :) Got any Fonseca 1920? The 'wifely' pass is looking promising. If the ticket is a bottle of ...

Re: Tues 5 May, The Best of the Fonseca Bicentennial Tasting
Before DRT’s announcement we had fifteen bottles for thirteen people. If we don’t replace his bottles we become thirteen bottles for a dozen people, which would be less than our standard per capita . If I can turn up a 92 (and maybe a 94), we'll then have 14 (or 15) bottles (one of which is a magnu...

Re: Tues 5 May, The Best of the Fonseca Bicentennial Tasting
Sorry, Chaps, I now need to be at the wrong end f the country on Tuesday so cannot join you. As my 1970 is one of a triplicate I shall simply save that for another day. I have no way of getting the 1992 to the venue on time but if someone else puts one in they can have one from the team stock as co...

OK, just one week to go. A quick reminder of who is bringing what: IDJ - 1955, 1960, 1966 TC - 1963, 1975 DRT - 1970, 1992 PW - 1977 RLC - 1970, 1980 CPR - 1983 DRL - 1985 Single JDAW - 1985 Magnum MPM - Waterloo, Bincentenary Crusted and a backup 70 I might also be able to lay my hands on a 1994. Re: Cellars - anything I should know
My first two thoughts were - keep the kids out and make sure the wife never gets to see everything that is in it Very good first thoughts. I doubt my wife would really be that interested in what was in my cellar (which doesn't yet exist properly). I have a pal at work who has a large cellar, and he...

No not at all. I'm also persuaded by Derek's thoughts! All those currently signed up are coming along next Tuesday - suggest we see then if we can pick a suitable date in late Sept or October.jdaw1 wrote:Derek’s arguments are persuasive. Flash: are you strongly against an autumn date?

Indeed a concern I had pondered. One factor in choosing Woolgate was the availability of decent aircon. Have added you to the listDRT wrote:This tasting sounds interesting but the timing sounds awful - is mid summer in London the right time of your to do this?

Re: The Sweet-spot Vintages (66,70,77)
I’d like to do some known comparisons. Labelling the fifteen wines as α1 α2 α3 β1 β2 β3 γ1 γ2 γ3 δ1 δ2 δ3 ε1 ε2 ε3 allows me to work on establishing which year is ‘1’, and which shipper is ‘α’. The structure educates. Mmm. I can see some merit in that. Would that not add significant blinding admin/...

Re: Wed 17 June 2015, The Sweet-spot Vintages (66,70,77)
Did you really intend to miss out Dow? Good point. I think Graham and Fonseca are first on the team sheet without question. I put Taylor in next, but now that I think about it, in order of personal preference, after G and F, I'd probably put Warre, Dow, Niepoort, Taylor in that order. This can give...

Re: The Sweet-spot Vintages (66,70,77)
Totally blind. Years must definitely be blind otherwise the purpose of the tasting can't be fulfilled. Shippers being blind adds a bit of extra fun. Voting would first be for scoring of wines. Then shipper-year guesses can be made.jdaw1 wrote:Include me in: yes please.

Re: The Sweet-spot Vintages (66,70,77)
Sounds like a very enjoyable tasting, count me in date depending Charles Top post updated. I think I'd better pick a date otherwise it could get messy trying to retrospectively make it fit. Wednesday 17 June is the provisional date. Venue perhaps Davy's Woolgate - they have a large room which could...

Re: The Sweet-spot Vintages (66,70,77)
As pondered in this post , how about a tasting to test whether 66, 70 and 77 are vintages of a similar calibre, or if there is a leader. Who is interested? Date TBC. The idea would be to take 3, 4 or 5 shippers (Graham, Fonseca, Taylor, Niepoort, Warre) depending on how many attendees, each shipper ...

20% opacity, really very clear, warm amber/tobacco. Rich honeycomb nose. Smooth, good length and sweetness. I enjoyed this - I arrived a little later to the table and I wonder if this improved as it waited in the glass. Others seem less enamoured with it.

60% opacity, dark red. Nose had some slight fruit. In the mouth, sweetness, not too long, mild heat in the middle and then a gentle tannic finish. Tobacco, prunes, peppery. Guessed by me to be W80 - right vintage wrong shipper. I was sure it was 80 and knew it wasn't Dow, Taylor, Fonseca, Smith Wood...

Yes Tom has been asked - we'll collect and equalise all the costs, so you just need to bring your walletdjewesbury wrote:Sorry - I just realised I've made no arrangement re adoption. Please, what do I need to bring? I can be responsible for the 80 if required..? Has THRA already been asked re this?
