Re: The Wine Society: recommendations

Ah, no. http://www.thewinesociety.com/shop/productdetail.aspx?section=pd&pl=&pd=SG1841&pc=&prl= Described as bone dry, but I'd say just a little sweeter than bone - lots of fruit. Your link is to the demi sec still wine. I haven't tried this one yet. Others have been delicious. These...

Re: The Wine Society: recommendations

Huet (Chenin Blanc, Loire). Make a great fizz, and excellent (and age worthy) sec, demi-sec and sweeter wines. Recently bought 2008 Haut-Lieu demi sec and a mixed case of 2009 Moelleux (which was apparently a good year). I have tried a variety of vintages and styles. For me they combine what I like ...

Re: Smith Woodhouse 1997 & Sundries

Could you let us know please how these have been stored since you bought them, and where they were originally acquired from?

I'm interested in the Smith Woodhouse 97, and possibly the others. Photos of the single bottles would be appreciated.

Edit. Sorry, 97. Mistype.

The observed effect is larger than that.
Thank you for the calculations. Yes, significantly larger. Either not the complete answer (wasn't expected to be) or idea was a load of tosh. :D

Re: General query on maturity in half bottles

Not sure any of that is relevant, or the subsequent calculations. While it is true to say that surfaces can act as sites for molecules to interact, that is only true if the molecules are of the type that do interact, I think. I'm fairly certain that port and glass do not cause any type of reaction....

Re: General query on maturity in half bottles

I suspect it has something to do with the ratio of oxygen to wine in the bottle, small bottles having a greater proportion of oxygen to wine than larger bottles. The same principle is at work in wooden casks, which is why they are topped-up to avoid the wine oxidising too quickly. Am thinking surfa...

Re: General query on maturity in half bottles

I remember from somewhere that surfaces act as sites for molecules to interact, generally increasing rates of reaction. Surfaces include glass, cork and suspended/deposited particles. Smaller bottles have a higher ratio of glass to liquid. Perhaps this is also a factor?

Where in London are you? SW 77 is a port I've tried and liked, and I have certainly considered buying some.

Re: 1994 Tesco

I was merely being facetious. That's my role here. The 1311 was taken from the mother-in-law sale on FTLOP, that being the exact quantity being sold there. Yes, but the very thought of that much Te94 was scary, and couldn't pass without comment. I have a confession to make. I've never really got th...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

I liked the Berry's Crusted 07, which I guess is the same as the Dow's Crusted 07 on offer at Asda at £12.50.

Re: 1994 Tesco

Less minty. Better but not great. Good for what it is, but won't mourn the change to a new Tesco cellar defender when the time comes.

A pallet of port is I suppose roughly the same size as a pipe, but sounds significantly less sophisticated. Two pallets of Te94. Sysyphean.

Re: Naming competition

A cask that was made by farmers João and António 134 years ago, which at the time we said wasn't good enough to command full price, but which we've had in our lodge all these years and which is now marketed as being made by us. And commands full price. Or. Which we bought as part of the recent take...

Re: 1994 Tesco

Tesco Wine by the Case website was out of Te94 but I see some for sale again (£20). I opened, coincidentally, a bottle of this last night, from the most recent batch bought at the beginning of November. A slightly different back label design, the same words but reworked layout, and a different plast...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Yes, thanks Phil. One Sainsbury's had no Crusted at all, but some Malvedos 01. The next had a mixture of 04 and 06. I wonder if the 98 is gone then? Still, all worth a try at those prices, I thought. Especially as the first Sainsbury's gave me a £6 off voucher off £60 voucher, promptly redeemed for ...

Re: Fonseca 1985 VP

At Berry's, I thought that the Taylor started very well but didn't get any better and that the Fonseca started less well than the Taylor but opened right up and became more interesting. The Croft was drinking very well, but I suspect many bottles of Croft would show less well than this. A bottle of ...

It will make an excellent wine to pair with a cheese board - sweet, still some tannins, plenty of acidity, fruity, evolved and not overpowering. They were recently available at about £15 or so, and are very pleasant, but no blockbuster.

Re: Port for sale by retailer

The good news is that Sainsbury's had a small stock of Graham Crusted 98 for sale yesterday, which I hoovered up (with the help of a stool - why do they shove the good stuff at the top, pushed right to the back - although perhaps this is why there was any left at all?) The bad news is that today not...

Excellent, congratulations. You did very well.
Christies sold a bottle which sounds very similar in Geneva on 12-13 Nov 2013, Sale 1399 Lot 82, for $899.
Item Description "Niepoort's Blue Ribbon Port Vintage 1896".
Very well done indeed.
