Re: 1983 Horizontal, Wed 27 Nov 2013, The Bung Hole

I wasn't as unimpressed by the 83s on show as JDAW, preferring to sum them up as 'the good, the bad and the indifferent'. It certainly helped to give me pointers towards some lesser lights I might wish to purchase eg the GC, OBV and-as AHB has alluded to, the Feuerheerd. My inexperience of tasting t...

Re: 27 Nov 2013, The Bung Hole, 83@30

Alex, the Cockburn had to be decanted at 8am. Incidentally, I went back to the offending bottle of G83 as you suggested and whilst not tip-top it was certainly drinkable-although not as good as the Cockburn.

Re: 1970 comparative pricing

Since Christopher introduced me to this 70s mantra at a previous tasting I have been actively seeking out all and any I can obtain (at reasonable prices). It remains to be seen how well the 11 bottles of G70 with 'very tatty labels' I managed to secure from Drewatts, will drink, but at just over £50...

Re: Port for sale at auction

Thanks for the responses-went with Benelux for a far more agreeable price (chap there was 'flabbergasted' by what mailboxes had quoted). Seems Benelux collect from most of the provincial auction houses. Interestingly, the chap there mentioned that they had seen a noticeable increase in Port traffic ...

Re: Port for sale at auction

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable and good value delivery firm that I can use to transport a stash of bottles I secured at the Hartleys auction last week? Their recommendation-Mailboxes, want to charge a fee in excess of £200 (including packing)! Incidentally, mention of the Croft ...

Re: 27 Nov 2013, The Bung Hole, 83@30

Houston, we have a problem! Just tried to open and decant the G70 before going into work and no purchase-the seal seemed intact but the cork's obviously dropped into the wine. Bit of bottle stink and so I'm taking no chances and switching to a Ck70, if that's ok-although not much time to stand it be...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Tesco is a largely UK based supermarket chain.
Incidentally, Saintsbury (another UK supermarket) has Graham's crusted (2001 I think) at £14 a bottle-from £20.

Re: Congratz to the Quevedos!

Excellent news for Oscar and the team, backing up the tagline I used for the Quevedo table at my nuptials in April this year-"one to watch for the future" (although I should have perhaps corrected to "one to watch now"!). Also looking forward to receiving my shipment and trying the '11 early doors, ...

Daniel,

I assume we're at capacity or is there room for a +1-I have a friend who would be interested in attending?

Re: Taylor Single Harvest Tawny 1964

This has been an excellent thread and one which gives backing to the adage 'there's no room for sentimentality in business' , although more's the pity as a couple of friends and I are quite fond of the Krohn Colheitas and believe them to be perhaps the best exponent of the style. However, this conti...

Re: Port for sale at auction

We seem to be into auction season as there are a number upcoming with one or two interesting lots (to my untrained eye). Anyone planning to take an interest-I don't wish to stand on any forumite's toes? I'm intending attending the Drewatts auction in a couple of weeks. I wonder how different experie...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Six bottles of the malvedos secured although it took trips to three different Saintsbury's in order to do so-they don't seem to like stocking more than one boxed bottle on the shelf! Not sure but I think the deal expires today.

Re: 27 Nov 2013, The Bung Hole, 83@30

I may well be too late but if not, can I be put down for this tasting-or else add me to the reserve list? I know I have a Graham's 83 I can put up although not sure what else.

Re: Port for sale at auction

I note that the price paid at Strakers for the N75 and Beresford 80 was £68.40 (inc BP) and so if DRT is able to take a chunk out of this that would be mildly satisfying!

Re: Port for sale at auction

Unless it's a coincidence (which it's not) then that Niepoort '75 has popped up on bid for wine. Talking of bfw I noticed that the three bottles of G70 didn't last long a someone from here perchance?! Anyone having an interest in the bonhams sale next week? I see that the buyer's premium has been in...

Re: Port for sale at auction

Interesting how Strakers charge a flat rate Buyer's Premium of £8.40 (inc VAT) per lot-good for cases but less so for small lots (and there are quite a few individually lotted bottles of Port). As Tom says, not much of interest-which is a pity as I'm driving down the M4 the following Friday and so w...

At a Dreweatts auction today, a case of Taylor's 92 sold for £700 (so £825 inc Buyer's Premium)-somewhat shy of the asking price here!

Re: Port for sale at auction

Probably sage words indeed Tom, especially now in hindsight I've founded I've secured zip (wife will be happy though!). I felt I knew a little bit about prices (albeit with little auction experience), but it would seem that with hammer prices averaging over 20% above upper estimate for the lots I bi...
