Re: Tue 15 Dec 2015, B&F, 1975 Horizontal

Huge thanks to Tom for a great horizontal of the 75s. Thanks too for all the bottles supplied by Tom... and also to Ian, Tony, and Wolfgang for their bottles too. I enjoyed the 75s more than the recent 85 horizontal, but I think the 85s in 10 to 15 yrs will show some great ports. A well deserved WOT...

Re: 75@40

The Niepoort 57 colheita can confirm it's attendance on Tuesday.... Looking forward to it. Tom - I am free all day to help set up. Let me know what time on Tuesday to come along? I shall just be enjoying the delights of borough market late morning, so happy to start the set up whenever you are ready...

Re: 11 x various bottles of Vintage Port for Sale

Hi Louise,

A quick note to thank you for the port. They were all as described and have gone to a good home...to be enjoyed with fellow :tpf: members at future meetings.

All the best and have a good Christmas.

Re: 75@40

Having looked through the posts, I don't think you are missing anyone unless you or Wolfgang are bring a guest that isn't listed.

The only question mark is Daniel who has stated that it maybe unlikely he can attend...
Daniel - can you confirm?

Re: 75@40

I thought there was going to be a Sandeman as well from various posts? But not to worry. Mike - I will see you there around 4pm and shall be there earlier in case. Tom - Are some of the 75s already at the B&F or what time will you be arriving with all the juice? All this planning has made me thirsty...

Re: 75@40

I am happy to set it up, but bear in mind this is only my second 'large' tasting after two emergencies. That said, I think I got the idea having helped at the 85 horizontal so... No problem. Therefore, I just need a few bits of info... Tom - Are the bottles at the Boot, and if not what time will the...

Re: 75@40

I am available all day so can be there from whenever required to help with decanting, pre-pouring and place setting (just let me know what time the action will start at the B&F). I am currently without use of a proper printer though, so if you can preprint the placemats Julian (assuming this task wi...

Re: 75@40

Hi Julian,

Has Tom mentioned the bonus bottle for the placemats that I am bringing along with his approval? It will be a Niepoort 1957 colheita that I hope will show well, especially given one of the attendees!

Hope that won't cause you much more admin.

Richard Mayson's Top 20 Ports for Christmas

See the attached link for RM's Christmas picks. Some very high scores indeed. I enjoy the warre's Otima 10yr old but not sure it is a 93 pointer... Or better than a Fonseca 85!?

Hi Lukas,

If you don't find a taker for the lot, I would potentially be interested in the bottle of Vesuvio Capela 2011 you listed.
I will drop you a private message.

Cheers,

Re: iSommelier

There was a feature on this on the UK Wine Show podcast a couple of weeks ago, and my understanding is the pricing is indeed 'fantastic' in the truest sense, and would be an abomination to my bank account! Very clever though, and useful if you want to drink a great old port without the need to pre-p...

NV Maynard 40YO Tawny

I thought I would try one of the 2 bottles of Maynard's 40Y Tawny bottles I managed to get, to see if an ongoing search of Aldi stores was worth the time to find more £30 bottles of this port. It is a very deep, dark mahogany brown colour, thinning to a clear rim. Lovely caramels coming through with...

Df85 Good fruits on the nose. A slight tawniness to it, possibly dry, but nice balanced heat on the finish. Very enjoyable and a good port from the 1st flight. 89 points

S85 Deep intense nose, and very youthful purple colour too (after the churchill on this flight). Kept improving as it opened up and was probably a 90+ pointer at the end after voting. A really lovely port. 89 points

GC85 Rich deep long finish with nice berry fruits. Slightly musty taste at first, that went after some time. A really nice port. I recorded I must explore GC vintages more as this was very pleasant. 89/90 points

T85 Not a great shower of a port that has a great reputation when a 'good' bottle is tasted. Possibly too young to judge and maybe in a closeed phase. Bold, fruity, good colour but no X-factor. By no means bad, but it disappointed for me. 89/90 points

G85 A first 'quality check' taste earlier in the day was stunning... but on the main tasting I didn't have the same experience. It was big, fruity, long on the finish, but without the balance and poise I felt it had earlier. 90/91 points

W85 A lovely 85 on this tasting comparison. Showed well against the others with good fruits and balance, but as with most the ports at this Horizontal, it left an underwhelming feeling of very close to special, but not quite there. Still a port I very much enjoyed. 91/92 points
