Lisbon's "Wine Tasting Room"
At the recommendation of a respected member here, I visited the Wine Tasting room in Lisbon a few days ago - I was doing my "tourist guide" thing for a visiting friend so it seemed appropriate. http://www.winesofportugal.com/en/travel-wine/wine-travel/wines-of-portugal-tasing-rooms/ (yes, ...

Re: 2009 Niepoort LBV
I think that the Niepoort LBVs are probably better after some years in bottle. In their youth they may not be better than their filtered peers. You asked me if I'd tried it yet - so, guinea-pig style, I took that as an indication that it was ready to be drunk! Not to worry - the friends like...

Re: The Porto - a new currency..
I was bored a few weeks ago, so I looked into BitCoin - I'd heard of it, but didn't really know what it was all about. I was shocked . I'm not talking about the underlying concept of BitCoin, but about the way new BitCoins are "mined". I downloaded a bit of software that mines coins - ther...

http://i60.tinypic.com/2j3hbfo.jpg Decanted at 6pm: opaque purple. Not much in the nose. Rich - blackberries, a bit rough, some heat - long finish - will it ever end? If it can just loose that slight rough edge, this would be excellent, at the moment it’s just fairly nice. D + 3: Some heat, elderbe...

Re: NV Ramos Pinto 20YO Tawny
RP's 20-yr old is a superb example of the genre. I was hoping it was something of a reference bottle - hence my experimenting with it. It's not that I didn't like it... Let's say I won (really, not a "Nigerian" win) tickets to either a Rugby International or a Football international - my ...

Very nice indeed. Are they made from scratch or do you re-use pieces of furniture? I thought I detected an upside down table leg. From scratch - the first 2 are oak, beech and ash. The "industrial" ones are CCP (cheap crappy pine). The last is oak (fumed in ammonia to make it blacker) and...

Re: "...and the bottle must remain up-right"
When I'm not drinking, I make things from wood. I started with this little guy... http://i62.tinypic.com/ycnz4.jpg This is now used for my "on deck" wines - the ones to drink shortly. ...and then this one... http://i61.tinypic.com/2lc1s2f.jpg ...bottles started exceeding storage, so I made...

Bottled in 2007 Pull-style cork I acquired this during the "25% off all ports" campaign in the local supermarket about 6 months ago. http://i57.tinypic.com/n4tc88.jpg Decanted at 5pm: Thick, gooey, caramel - heat, but a bit sickly sweet. Now usually I make multiple notes - each time there'...

Re: "...and the bottle must remain up-right"
Just a minute, this isn't you buying more white port is it? I thought you had been reasoned out of this madness. No, no, no, no no, no no. This is not me buying more white port. This is just me happening upon a bottle of white port and not buying it. I suspect it is because it has a stopper rather ...

I happened to be surfing around, (easily) resisting the temptation to buy a bottle of Kopke White 10 years Port. But, in reading the "blurb", which seemed very much like it had come from an official source, here... http://www.portugalvineyards.com/wines/kopke-white-10-years-port I spied th...

Re: Baga Friends tasting
If anyone gets the chance to try Filipa Pato EspÃrito de Baga Uma Saga (Beiras, Portugal) then please let me know what you think. I would anticipate a Maury-style wine. I was flipping, electronically, through Portugal Vineyards catalogue and ran across this - Baga wine fortified with Baga Brandy -...

After carefully explaining my question, "The Don" at Sandeman replied with this explanation... "As you might know we can divide demarcated Douro region in three subregions: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior – as you can see on the image below. They produced different types of...

Re: Seeking "The Authentic Vintage Port" experience...?
To really experience White Port you need to get one that is well-aged, ideally a 1952 Dalva Golden White. But since those are exceedingly rare, any of the Kopke 10-, 20-, 30-, or 40-year olds will suffice, as would the other Dalva Golden Whites (1963, 1971). Ah ah - thanks - they are now on my list.

Re: "Made to be drunk young"
From notes that I copied down from somewhere or other on the web for a talk I gave: "The Tinta Roriz represents the largest proportion of new plantings after the Touriga Francesa. Its large berries and big bunches produce relatively high yields and the variety gives its best results in dry yea...

Re: "Made to be drunk young"
I think it's all just in the balance of grapes used in the blend. Fiercely tannic varieties (maybe Touriga Nacional or Tinta Cão) that would give great longevity but which make the wine inaccessible in the short term are not required, whereas more floral varieties (perhaps including Tinta Barroca?)...

Re: "Made to be drunk young"
Not quite answering the question, but nonetheless you might want to know that SV97 in half-bottle is way over the hill, but in double-magnum is still drinking nicely. So perhaps these wines spent a couple of years in itsy-bitsy-baby-sized bottles not unlike those one finds in hotel rooms before bei...

Sometimes I see a flavour of this. Notably ... "Sandeman Porto Vau Vintage 2003 is a Vintage Porto of exceptional quality and modern style that may be enjoyed while still young or after ageing...". Ditto for the 1999. For some reason there's nothing on the 2011 Vau, but my understanding is...

Well, I managed to get rid of the rest of it, which was most of it (I'd normally say "better part", but it didn't have a better part), at a small BBQ a couple of days ago - the hostess is a white wine drinker, and she really liked it, so it went to a good home. I have a Ramos Pinto Lágrima...
