Re: Cockburn Vertical, Tue 2nd Oct 2018

Default please.

I thought one of the points of the default food thread was that the default order was taken as the order unless the individual actively and explicitly specifies something different? Kind of defeats the purpose if everyone needs to restate their default order every time does it not?

Re: Cockburn Vertical, Tue 2nd Oct 2018

I can get there a bit earlier, maybe 4pm? If I start decanting the younger stuff first, and work towards older, then if someone else can get there for 5.30 to help with pouring that would be great.

Re: Wed 12 September — 2016

Many thanks to both Tony for organising and the producers who kindly shared bottles with us to taste. The format for the tasting worked very well I thought, with bottles opened and available in the middle of the table for self-pouring. On the whole I thought that the majority of these ports were a l...

Re: Bad News if You're Shipping Port in the EU

The port shippers in Portugal if they could be bothered could ship from a bonded warehouse to other EU countries and that would avoid the double taxation. Complete palaver though. They still need to handle the destination duties and Vat up front.

Time has crept up on me. I will start collecting money now.

For those coming to any tasting at the B&F between now and 2nd Oct could you please deposit your bottles in the cellar?
I’ll drop my bottle off next Wednesday.

Re: Software that makes placemats

Julian - Thomas V over on FTLOP has posted that the ps to pdf converter seems to no longer function with a placemat .ps file. Any ideas what's happened? I suspect the converter is doing something different and doesn't like something in the .ps file. The converter at www.ps2pdf.com also seems to have...

Re: 2016 VP's - Wed 12 September

I suggest organising it as a self-pour walk around tasting. Put all the bottles on some tables at one end of the Red Room and people just help themselves to what they want, sitting down and taking notes as they wish. That would work.. Yes like that idea. Everyone can pace themselves accordingly.

Re: 2016 VP's - Wed 12 September

The largest tasting in recent times was the Vesuvio vertical where we had 22 if I recall correctly. Given how young these are, I could see a possibility where we could have more like 16 or 18 attendees, spread across red and green rooms, and make each pour more like 35-40ml. Of course we might not f...

Decanted 20 hours. Alex deployed the magnum trick - this was a magnum split and played as two blind 75cl bottles. Here are both my notes for the same wine! 75% opacity, dark red-purple. Dark fruits and spices on the nose. Chewy, chocolate, tannic, stewey. 75% opacity, dark red. Jammy red fruit on th...

Decanted 12 hours. 30% opacity, slightly cloudy, brown-amber, yellow rim. Nose has menthol and stewed prunes. Smooth, sweet entry, alcohol. Re: Hello from Lisbon

Welcome RNR!

I also have a Coravin, but haven't used it with a VP yet. Given that you need to tip the bottle up to get the wine to flow, I do wonder if the bottle sediment would end up clogging the needle hole. Maybe a quick blast of argon would clear it if that happened.

Bottled 1973. 30% opacity, amber tobacco. Amazing nose, fresh, oranges. Smooth, syrupy, sweet, but dryness late on palate. Oranges. Acidity lacking a little so a touch flabby. Very nice nonetheless.
