Re: Deep thought..

In a recent blog conversation, a collector of antique gold sovereigns made the argument that because there would always be a few coins lost each year, those that remained would gain value in real terms. I replied that in percentage terms, that would probably be well under 1% p.a. whereas if you inv...

Re: Alcohol and health

Bacon is the food used to make other food better. So... Bacon good. Alcohol also good now. How long before Woody Allen's "bananas" becomes prophetic and we declare smoking good? Sent from my TARDIS at the restaurant at the end of the universe while eating Phil. Whilst I agree on the bacon...

Hello again!

Joined up mid year this year but got distracted by too much mead making. Now that that is under control (by which I mean completely out of control) I can return to the task of finding a decent bottle of port in Miami Beach. It gives me something to drink while I wait for the mead. Sent from my iPhon...

OH was that not the bottle? Thank you. I've caught the planted tank bug. Those pics are about two years old. OH I see now.. the link took you to the entire album. Hope you didn't have to wade through all my boring hobbies to get to the bottle...

I suspect this had been sitting on a very warm shelf for a long time.
Here you go.

Just for laughs I ran it through a coffee filter and there was nothing left behind. Looks like it got some kind of bacteria or something. More tomorrow!

I'll be taking it back tomorrow. It didn't look like it had been sitting.. dust free.. That's the bottle in the background there.

Grahams Fine Ruby Port - cloudy?

I just ran out and bought a what I thought would be a nice cheap ($20) bottle of ruby port (here's a link to what I found at my local wine merchant http://www.beersofeurope.co.uk/grahams-fine-ruby-port) Supposedly does not need decanting. I just wanted something to enjoy while I did a little interne...

Re: Tropical Port Storage

Thank you very much for the insight! As I am writing this, my three central air conditioners are barely keeping up with the 95F heat and over 80% humidity on Miami Beach. They pretty much switch on in May and work 24/7 until mid December to keep my house from feeling like a jungle. In beer brewing, ...

Re: What kind of sherry?

Second the Amontillado. I also doubt that the sherry would stay in any decanter long enough to oxidize beyond being drinkable. At least not if I was upstairs...or downstairs for that matter. As a good employee, I would make sure the lords weren't drinking bad sherry

I've always thought that corks let some (relative term) air through.

Here's an article about a UC Davis study on corks vs screwcaps and the flavor of wine.

Re: Beer, 32% ABV

In the states this is done with cider and called "apple jack." That's not beer, it's "barley jack". That kind of freezing leaves all the impurities behind as it takes out more and more water. Must taste like the bottom of a fermenter.

Welcome to :tpf: Is there an active Port market down there or are you stranded in a desert of inferior thirst quenchers? Derek PS: Can we address you by a proper name? The market is not bad. I can usually find something nice to drink. I will post pictures of my next shopping trip in a few days. As ...

Tropical Port Storage

Ignoring the fact that most retail purchases I make down here will have a high chance of being improperly handled at the store, once I get it home there's no chance of proper storage for any length of time beyond a wine fridge. Which are the brands I should be looking at to assure a long life at my ...

Re: Hello from Miami Beach!

I'll most likely just get a set of regular glasses, but keep a pair of these oddities for fun. They actually look like something to use when I taste my wort before right after the boil. Or as I've found, they can double as schnapps pipe.

Looking forward to attending a tasting one day!

Hello from Miami Beach!

I was doing a little research on "port sippers" and came across this wonderful forum! I"M about to turn the garage into a dedicated man cave that will include among other things, a small area for decanting port. Looking through the net for prices on Reidel prices on port glasses I saw...
