Re: Best Online Stores
Hello Daniel, Thank you for your quick replay. I will certainly go to search in wine-searcher.com. I'm from Italy and I'm interested in Taylor's 40 years old tawny. On a quick search on google I found the store http://www.portwineonline.net. Do you know this store? Is it reliable? Has anyone purcha...

Oporto Liquors further down on Ferry Street from Lisbon has a pretty decent selection.
Lisbon Liquors has anything over a reserve locked up in the back (with a couple LBV excepted).

looking for magical PORT elixirs for restoring health
Everyone has (or knows someone who has) some sort of magic potion for making them feel better when they are sick. My neighbor told me to boil a red onion and drink the water (no thanks). Another boils an orange in tea and drinks that (okay, better than onion water). I have one glass left in my bottl...

The answer from RWC: Hi John, You should be able to find those at The Wine Library in Springfield as well as Gary’s Wine in Wayne. "Proper" port decanters?
In another thread, the subject of decanters came up. I have used my wine decanters for port... basically whatever decanters I have picked up over the years as various gifts. What are the characteristics of a proper "port decanter"? (maybe a link to pics so I can see it in relation to other...

Re: half bottles of vintage port for novice?
I am going to be in Newark, NJ next week at a portuguese liquor store, so if I see a reasonably priced 375ml vintage, I'll snatch it up. I recently had a novice tasting, where we focused on ruby reserves, then 10, 20 and a 1990 colheita. (I posted about it on another thread). I was thinking for a ne...

half bottles of vintage port for novice?
I was searching out the nearest liquor stores around my home to check out their inventories. One place had mostly cooking port, some basic rubies, basic tawnies, a 10 year old, and then I noticed a 375 ml of 2000 vintage port from one of the larger producers of port. To give you an idea about the ty...

RWC madeira in NJ, USA
Anyone know where I can purchase the Rare Wine Company's historic Madeiras series in the Garden State? I live in central New Jersey, but routinely travel in north NJ.
I do not want to purchase online; I'd prefer to make a side trip somewhere.
Thanks.

Re: ideas for port tasting for novices for self-education
PhilW, I was looking for a preferred tawny from Grahams so we could see the progression to the 10 and 20. But I got tired of peeking in and out of liquor stores looking for it, and never wound up buying a tawny. There was no style of port that went without compliments, even the introductory chilled ...

Re: ideas for port tasting for novices for self-education
I wish I had the experience to be able to put to aptly words to the experience of tonight's tasting. So I will generalize: first of all, we had happy customers. one consumer of port confessed that he didn't think he liked port before the night started (obviously now he has an appreciation and unders...

Re: ideas for port tasting for novices for self-education
Here is the line-up, which came about from my personal stockpile, what was available at the nearby stores, and how those fit with my own ideas. This is a tasting of 6 people, all novices port tasters. When they walk in, they will be served a white chilled port, Warre's. (I am thinking that I may the...

How to serve a 1991 Niepoort colheita
Novice questions:
Does this port require decanting? If so, how long before serving?
Right now, it's stored on its side in a cool dark place. I plan on serving it Friday night.
Serving temp? Room temp?

Re: Recommendation for port purchase in/for New York
I've been going through some old threads, and hence reviving this one. I live in NJ, USA and since several in this thread have already commented on locations to buy port in the state... I was looking for more suggestions. I live in central, NJ, but am often traveling to the northern sections of the ...

ideas for port tasting for novices for self-education
I am new to the forum. Here is my basic background: I drink port, usually having a bottle or two in the house. But I am by no means a connoisseur, but rather consider myself a casual drinker. I haven't had a port that I didn't like. I've tasted the range at different times, but never side by side. J...
