1970 Sandeman

One of those ghastly plastic caps on the top and the cork looks wet. But the level is still in the neck. I don't remember where I got this, but I seem to think I bought it largely on price. I thought I had more but god knows where. Not much on the nose but a bit of alcohol, let us be generous and sa...

1998 Smith Woodhouse Madalena

The cork crumbled to dust before it was willing to let go of the bottle. Dark in colour, not much bricking or browning at the rim. A big nose of fruit and tar which was very persistent. Initially a bit hollow in the mid section of the palate, this filled out over about four hours. Nice dark fruits a...

1980 Graham

The cork melted into crumbs when approached with a corkscrew but it decanted cleanly and has a good hard crust which enabled me to get most of the bottle very cleanly. The colour is dark, solid rim with a suggestion of tawny at the edge. Long legs down the side of the glass. There is something of ch...

NV Graham Crusted 1998

At 21 years from the bottling date this is just of age. I liked this in the past. On looking at my notes this seems to have pulled itself together. It does not seem to have that jammy, slurred quality to the fruit previously noted, a bit more elegant and sustained. This has tightened up nicely with ...

1980 Warre

Consistent with previous bottles this is a very high quality, typical Warre vintage. Packed with bitter tannins and a muddy brown rim which makes me think it might drop a lot of colour in the next five years, but then again the 66 didn't.

Let Them Drink Port!

This is a link to Billy Kay's 'Complete Caledonian Imbiber' programme 'Let Them Drink Port' on YouTube. It is a bit soft round the edges but I enjoyed it. I have heard this before, but certainly not in 1994 which is when it was recorded. Half an hour of straight bat porty stuff. https://www.youtube....

Re: Port for sale by retailer

Waitrose have their “buy six get 25% off” sale going until Tuesday. Unfortunately I don't think that fortified wines are included in the sale this time. Sainsbury's also did not have them in 25% off sale a few weeks ago and Tesco haven't for some time. However M&S, which also have a buy 6 and g...

Re: 2016 Declarations

I received the Wine Society 2016 offer today.

They are offering their own blend of a Symington port under their 'Exhibition' label. which they imply is different from other Symington wines. They also offer Quinta do Vale D. Maria, and Quinta de Roriz.

1977 Cockburn

This still seems to be settling into itself after recorking, my advice would be give it a bit longer. Good port though, well good for me; Light with plenty of acidity, more red currants than black fruit. A slightly querulous note in there somewhere. Similar to a lot of 77s in that it is sere, pale a...

Re: Tasting

This is an interesting topic, thank-you for posting it. When drinking a wine/port I often think about what it tastes like in reference to other things. But when I read a note with the wine in front of me I almost never find the tastes described. So it might more helpful to consider the other aspects...

Re: 1994 Tesco

Thanks for the photos. A mystery. The cork being more red at one end does seem to indicate that it was used as a stopper, so Warre 94 seems quite likely. I wonder if a few Warre 94 were used to make up the quantities that Tesco needed, and you got lucky. It seems unlikely all Tesco 94 would be Warr...

My apologies for the photos being the wrong way round and upside down. In my defence they look the right way round on the iPad and all wrong on the laptop. I have no idea how to fix them.

Due to the rubbishness of the camera on this iPad and the operator these are less than ideal. The the first picture shows '1994 vintage' the second shows the '1670' logo. I may try again, but I am reluctant to break the bottle to get the cork out. I might keep it as a trophy.

Re: 1994 Tesco

Blimey. Having shone a torch down the neck and shaken it a bit the name on the cork is very clear; Warre, vintage 1994. That is both very surprising and excellent news. Good find, well done. Tesco 94 can't really be W94 though, can it? I wonder what the Tesco 97 is. Thank-you, and the thought about...

Re: 1994 Tesco

On finishing the most recent bottle of this I notice that the bottle rattles. There is a cork in the bottom. It has the most recent label and I am hoping that there may be brand on it to clear up once and for all what it was once upon a time. Too late to be breaking bottles tonight. I shall put it i...

Re: Graham's Malvedos 1968

The one thing about the 1968 is that this year, being it's 50th birthday, it will be worth a little more. All those people looking for a 50th birthday present. Next year it will be worth a little less. Don't get too excited though, half retail is the usual advice, and low retail at that. Look on win...

1985 Graham

I have had a few 85s recently which I thought had been going through an awkward phase, Warre, Dow and Sandeman, so I thought I would check in on this, one of my favourites. Good colour, clear and bright, dark, but not in the first flush of youth, the meniscus is fading at the rim but not too brown o...

Re: The wine shed - a concept, and some horrible maths..

But seriously a very impressive looking bit of maths. I am unqualified to comment on it. I have always taken the view (and suited the action to the thought) that I put celotex on the outside of my wine store (the insulation) and the breeze blocks on the inside (thermal inertia). I have no idea if th...

Cork Weevil

Having read the reports of the Christmas do I cannot think that I have ever come across cork weevil although I have heard about it. Could those with experience tell me what to look out for. I wonder if you can get weevil in corks where there is a good solid capsule? Will they go right through a coll...

1983 Warre

Decent dark colour, a bit paler at the rim but not worryingly so. An initial sip on opening gave a sense of ruffled tannin and a hint of sweetness on the finish. Once opened for a few hours I had another go and it was a pleasant and competent port but with not much chutzpah. Rather dry, rather sombr...

Not sure about 'interstellar space'. Has it even reached the Oort Cloud yet? Is there an Oort Cloud? But I do love a space mission.
