Quinta do Noval & Nacional tasting, Februar 2018, Germany
as might read about we had a fantastic Noval tasting in Leverkusen, Germany in February. Overall 23 different Vintage Ports (1955-2015), including three NACIONALs (1994, 1999 and 2011). Wine of the night (elected by the 16 participants) was Noval 2000. From NACIONAL (elected separate) was 2011 the f...

What is the best closure for Vintage Port?
Oscar Quevedo start some weeks ago a very interesting experiment to answer this question. He bottled his 2014 Vintage Port with 3 different closures: - natrual cork - screwcap - plastic cork + a fourth bottle in "pota" shape (with natural cork) to see in a decade or so with what closre the...

Warre Vintage Port 70s and 80s bottle variation?
Last week I opened a bottle of Warre 83. Usually one of the best wines of this Vintage. But the bottle was obviusly not perfect. In the nose a little bit alcoholic and volatile acid. On the palate not really bad, but weaker than in memory. I also remember, that I had a similar problem with Warre 77 ...

stay cool guys. first of all - all kind of media love sensation and exxageration. so this falstaff report leaves more questions than it gives answers. I´m pretty sure - that he won´t leave forever. and that he "leaves" now says nothing about if he stay as consultant or not and says nothing...

that is a really funny story. thanks for sharing. whenever I will drink a bottle of offley 66 or sandeman 77 in the future - my thoughts are with you - I hope this will not cause posttraumatic problems for you  Beside this I fear that the period of limitation for fraud in Portugal is not more t...

Re: Which LBVs are worth cellaring?
For the vast majority of them, about 20-ish years really is the longest they should be kept. Will they drink nicely past that, yes. But what I often find with the older ones (25+ years) is they just don't have the capacity to retain my drinking interest like an older VP does. They tend to become ve...

Re: 1966 Review
my favourite was Dow, Warre and Fonseca, but the Port of the Night was Noval Nacional. Amazingly the regular Noval was just a tiny hint behind this. yes this was a true suprise and an example of the importance of the bottling company, when we speak about old VP. In this case it was a Charles Kinloc...

Hi Christopher, fantastic book!!!! I downloaded it last night and had the plan to drink a few glasses of Port while reading it. In the end I was so fascinated that I forgot to re-fill my glass... :D It's a great piece about the Douro Valley - and while I know many of the places that you have mentio...

new book about the Douro valley
Dear Port lovers, I´m a littel bit proud to announce that my book project about the Douro valley is finally released ("Das Douro-Tal" ISBN: 9783739215143): christopher-pfaff-das-douro-tal-9783739215143.jpg The book is a nearly 200 pages tourist travel guide about the Douro valley (german l...

Re: 2013 Declarations
The main Quinta of the Bulas Cruz family is Quinta da Costa do Baixo, on the north bank in Cima Corgo, close to Crasto. I assume the will call it just "Bulas", that is what they did with their last declarations.

Re: Buy 1997?
Is this the final word? From my point of view - no it isn´t.Time will tell, but I´m sure, that are many very good Ports from 1997. I recently enjoyed Taylor and Smith Woodhouse. E.g. this both have a better acid structure and are more austere than their examples of 1994. Of course they have not the...

Re: 2015 Harvest
Francisco Ferreira have told via facebook, that the harvest at Vallado starts today with the picking of Moscatel Galego grapes.
that the harvest starts with white grapes is not unusual, but a beginning in the Baixo Corgo on 18th of August seems to me as it will be an early harvest in general.
