2001 Fonseca Guimaraens VP

Tasted January 2004: Tasted it after it had been opened for one day. I don't think my notes will differ a lot from those of Stevie, but here they come anyway. Very concentrated black color, with only a small bright purple/pink rim. The nose is just awesome, with lots of cherries, roses and spices (I...

1966 Quinta do Noval VP

Tasted April 2006: Bottled by Berry Bros. and bought there about a year ago. Directly after decanting: old brownish colour with only hints of red and orange. A bit hot and medicinal on the nose, witl lots of old notes like leather, tobacco and earth. The palate shows smoky flavours, some dried fruit...

1994 Martinez VP

Tasted March 2006: Reveals a touch of age on the nose with some leather aromas accompanying the lovely fresh fruit. Very approachable, medium sweet and medium bodied port. Refined and elegant, with nice cherries, bay leaf, dried herbs and liquorice. I loved it, it’s all about finesse and complexity,...

1994 Warre's VP

A note from January 2006:
Still very fruity on the nose, although a touch of leather is giving away some age. Lovely flavours, this doesn’t win on concentration, but on subtlety and distinctness. Very nice. 92

A note by me from January 2006:
Refined glass of port, already many older notes (tobacco, leather) but still good fruit and very lively. Full, spicy and interesting. Silky soft, long finish. Did seem older than the ‘85’s I previously tasted. 94

Dutch 'Prikbord' offline: 25 ports from 2000 and some others

These are notes from January 2006: ------------------- Yesterday, I was happy to attend an offline of members of 'Wijnprikbord', the largest and most active wine forum in the Netherlands. 16 people attended this tasting, 25 VP's 2000, three VP's 2003, one 1994 and one 1985. I owe a big thank you to ...

NV Quinta de Baldias Tawny 20YO (bottled 2002)

Tasted January 2006: I was a bit afraid this would not be too good, because of it's long time in bottle (sort of a forgotten bottle...), but no need to worry, it was still great. Very dark for a 20YOT. Nutty nose with good freshness (citrus peel) and raisins. Not alcoholic at all. On the palate it i...

1999 Quinta do Crasto LBV

Tasted December 2005: This is an unfiltered LBV - bottled 2003 Youthful color but not very concentrated. Very pleasant nose with sweet cherries, prunes and a touch of fat/butter. Some nice flavours of red currant, cherries and licorice, but overall lacking in structure - a bit diluted and a bit gree...

1974 Quinta do Noval Colheita (bottled 2004)

1974 Quinta do Noval Colheita Port (bottled 2004) Tasted September 2005: Clear, brown color with a bit of orange/rusty bricking. Medium sweet nose, full with raisins, caramel, dried citrus peel and mocha. A bit creamy and a only slightly medicinal. Lots of citrus in the mouth, together with candied...

My TN from the BBR offline, August 2005:
A bit rusty and old on the nose. Lots of leather and wet earth. The sweetness only comes out later. When tasting it I wondered whether this bottle was slightly corked. Dusty, old leather and candied sugar. Not to my liking

1977 Taylor's Vintage Port

My TN from the BBR offline, August 2005: This is a primal scream! Still hard, although the fruit seems to come around a bit. Very dense. One for the very long haul and IMO a great example of what this port is capable of. Didn't really make detailed notes, because I was too busy emptying the bottle. ...

1977 Fonseca VP

I've been lucky enough to have tated this port a number of times. The first time was on an offline with Stevie, LadyR and joea. An absolutely stunning bottle, of which I don't think I made notes, but maybe Stevie can post his. The second bottle was was utterly disappointing. I poured it blind to Ste...

1970 Graham's VP

My TN from the BBR offline. August 2005: Definitely the oldest nose of the 1970's. A bit dusty, lots of secondary aroma's and some dried nettle. Oof, this tastes sweet. Candied sugar, slightly hot, and sweet, sweet, sweet. Not my cup of tea (and sorry David, not something I would bring to a first da...

1970 Taylor's VP

My TN from the BBR offline, August 2005: Very fresh, young nose, with lovely red fruit, some tobacco and a whiff of alcohol. I was very impressed with the taste; so young, so powerful, packed with fruit, only some secondary aroma's showing. Thick and stingy. A great glass of port. My no. 3 of the ev...

My TN from the BBR offline, August 2005: Somewhat older looking than the Dow's. Dried fruit on the nose (prune and apricot), aniseed and leather. More outspoken in the nose than the Dow's; after a while some more sweet fruit appears. In the mouth it starts very smooth, very soon getting spicy, with ...

My TN from the BBR offline, August 2005: Very youthful color still. I hardly find any fruit on the nose, mostly tar. Taste is much more pronounced: peppery and spicy, with figs and other jammy fruit. Quite powerful and straightforward as Dow's tend to be. Lovely long finish with coffee and chocolate.

2000 Sao Pedro das Aguias VP

Tasted January 2005 (together with KillerB): A very nice port. Very accesible. Straightforward fruit (berries and cherries), round and sweet. Will be nice on the short term, it lacks the structure and complexity to make it a truly good VP, but very nice nonetheless. Note: it cost me 17 euros, and fo...

1952 Presidential Reserve Golden White Port (bottled 2002) Tasted January 2005, TN by LadyR: Joe has been carrying this white port to many OLs, but we never opened it, sooooo.........now it was time to pull the cork. Very clear brown to golden colour, yellow-gold on the rim. This is a port that is ...

1991 Croft VP

Tasted February 2005: lovely nose and a very nice silky structure, with lots of strawberries, blueberries and blackberries on the palate, completed by some bitter chocolate, spices and pepper. Medium bodied, elegant but with plenty grip. This is drinking very nicely now, but will hold (and possibly ...

That's maybe a bit harsh since this was their first try. But it surely wasn't a good port. The newer VP's from Churchill (I've tasted 1997, 1998 and 2000) are pretty good.
The 1995 was a disappointment as well (see TN somewhere else in this section).

Just check the bottom of the glass. It'll either have a small 'L' or an 'R'.
