Re: Your first vintage port(s)

If I recall correctly, my first VP was a bottle of 1977 Taylor. Up to that point in time I had tried plenty of tawnies/colheitas as well as a number of LBVs...the Taylor blew me away. It had a great nose, powerful on the palate and the finish was never ending.

It was quite the experience...

Re: Fair price for 1933 niepoort?

The 1933 Niepoort would be a Garrafeira. I have a bottle of the 1931 Niepoort Garrafeira which has the identical label and verbiage as the 1933.

Re: Keeping track

Re: Ramos-Pinto: a vertical

Depending on the dates, I'd be interested in possibly flying over the pond for this tasting. I can't say that I've had the opportunity to taste Ramos-Pinto in a vertical format. Sounds very interesting! As far as bottles go I have the 1945, 1970, 1983 (750 & mag), 1985, 1994 and 1995. In additio...

The Champagne is chilling, a bottle of 1974 Taylor has been decanted and shortly I'll start preparations for our celebratory leg of lamb dinner. It is shaping up to be quite an enjoyable evening!

Re: WOTY 2013

I'd say that the one port that blew me away in 2013 was a stunning bottle of 1927 Fonseca. I must say that it was a close call between the Fonseca and a bottle of 1945 Noval Nacional that was spectacular.

The oldest vintage port would a 1830 Ferreira. In terms of Colheitas, the oldest would be a 1875 A.J.S. Da Silva.

Re: Taylor Single Harvest Tawny 1964

I'm in total agreement with DRT on this point. If it is actually a W&K product, then it should be labeled as such. Slapping a Taylor label on wine that had taken W&K over 40 years to produce doesn't seem fair or equitable and is at best dishonest.

Re: Personal port traditions

I have around 100 empty VP bottles in my garage waiting for a time when I have a room in which to display them. I wonder if we could find somewhere that could use Julian's software to produce placemat wallpaper? I also display many of the more memorable bottles either in the bar area or down in the...

Re: Graham's vertical

I believe that Graham also declared 1954 I suspect this is an error by Suckling, and that the .se site lifted some of its data from his book. There was a 1954 Malvedos, rarely seen, but noted by Broadbent. Although Graham rattled off some consecutive declarations up until 1901, their declaration st...

Re: Graham's vertical

Glenn,

I believe that Graham also declared 1954. Check out Suckling's book, he has TN on it and it is also listed on vintageport.se. If I recall correctly it was a small declaration so finding bottles of it 60 years later is a tad difficult..

Typically I try to save the pre-1960 stuff for get-togethers with other Port lovers that can appreciate the nuances of a 50+ year old Port. Anything younger is fair game!

Re: How to re-wax bottles

This process requires some trial & error before it can be perfected. I've rewaxed quite a few bottles over the past few years and just by doing it a few times I've perfected the process a bit which has resulted in a much better, cleaner capsule.

Re: What else do VP drinkers put in their cellar?

Let' see...94% of my cellar is Port with the remainder being being First Growths/Cali reds/Burgs. The other 6% (non-Port) tends to cycle through rather quickly and forms the basis of much of my day-to-day drinking (with meals ect.). With that being said, I also tend to open quite a few Single Quinta...

Re: Selling Port

I believe that the 1950 vintage was widely declared, but the wines were on the lighter side and have not really stood up well to the rigors of time. Actually 1950 was very similar to 1960, nice gentle wines that tended to mature early, but really didn't have the stuffing for the long haul. In retros...

Re: Vesuvio sales at Christies

I have a feeling that this is related to the collectability of T77 vs. T80/T75 Collectability pushes up price, which in turn reduces consumption; but is it really the case that for every surviving bottle of T75, there are 14 surviving bottles of T77? T77 trades at around double the price of T75. If...

I have a feeling that this is related to the collectability of T77 vs. T80/T75 which aren't viewed in the light as some of the more classic bottlings (T77, F77, T70, ect.)
