Re: Best time to visit Porto/Douro?

While I agree 100% with Andy that Porto is completely overrun with tourists, I don't feel this yet so much in the Douro Valley... I think the real tourism wave comes in a few years and the place will turn into something Tuscany-like. But JB Vintage, with regards to your question: If I would have to ...

Re: new book about the Douro valley

Hi Christopher, fantastic book!!!! I downloaded it last night and had the plan to drink a few glasses of Port while reading it. In the end I was so fascinated that I forgot to re-fill my glass... :D It's a great piece about the Douro Valley - and while I know many of the places that you have mention...

Re: Port & wine websites and blogs

Hello Simon. Of course I'm absolutely biased - but I like my own blog on Facebook very much: https://www.facebook.com/Portwein-118856431560215 I try to show the beauty of everything Port Wine related - and you can find tons of photos that I took during my many trips to the Douro and Porto... Re: Drinking in Lisbon

My favorite Port place in Lisbon is "Grapes & Bites". It's in the heart of Bairro Alto - which is the perfect part of Lisbon for tourists, anyhow... The selection of wines and especially Port Wines is absolutely nice... When I saw that they have several wines from Andresen on their lis...

Re: 6-Day Porto & Douro Trip for £52!!

Thanks for sharing - that is really amazing... I wish I would have been on that trip... Can you imagine the list of wines that they will have tasted? Maybe Quinta do Noval 1931? Or Fonseca 1945? Niepoort 1927? It must have been a fantastic tour. I'm amused by the fact that the coach is driven by an ...

Re: Quevedo VP availability

In case you guys make it to Porto, Quevedo has opened a very nice lodge in Gaia. It's well worth a visit. It's an old building, totally remodeled. It consists of two floors - whereby I have the feeling that nobody knows yet exactly what will be done with the ground floor, at least it didn't look fin...

"Beneficio" set at only 85,000 pipas!

As I just saw on http://www.ivdp.pt ("Comunicado de Vindima 2011"), the quota for the harvest 2011 has been announced: 85,000 pipas. That is very sad news... Obviously the established port wine drinking nations have reduced the consumption, and even if countries like Brazil (volume up 30%)...

Quinta da Foz sold

The "Revista de Vinhos" wrote yesterday that the Quinta da Foz was sold to a group of investors from Angola. The Quinta is located in Pinhao and had belonged the last approx. 150 years to the CALEM family. The family had already sold a part of their assets to SOGEVINOS, 13 years ago (the b...

Re: Finally booked it - Porto trip is on

Dear Nick, I'm glad you enjoyed Porto. Just reading the description of your days in Porto I got a very strong sensation of "saudade", this melancholic longing for something. I have travelled quite a lot - but no other town has fascinated me as much as Porto. There is something in me that f...

Hi Jacob: I looked through some of my books, and George Robertson lists in his book "Port" (3rd revised edition 1992) in the appendix "Vintage Ports and Their Shippers 1869-1987" the following vintages: "Stormont Tait 1896, 1900, 1904, 1908, 1912, 1920, 1922, 1927". And...

Re: A plea to the Symingtons

Hello Julian - thanks for your interesting posts. Many web-pages have a lot of room for improvement. My dream would be that the big port wine shippers would scan all their archives and make them available to the public - I would for sure spend a lot of evenings going through the old documents (and I...
