Today is Portwine Day!

Portwine Day CoverTPF.jpg Since many years 10 September is celebrated in Portugal and abroad with a (very nice) glass of Port – or two. Please join me in opening a decent bottle of Port and toast this to the many generations of people who made Port possible and so enjoyable – winemakers, famers, pr...

Re: 2018 Declarations

THE FLADGATE PARTNERSHIP PRESS RELEASE 2018 VINTAGE RELEASE On 23rd April, Taylor’s, Fonseca and Croft Ports – all members of The Fladgate Partnership - have, by tradition, announced whether they will release a Vintage Port and, if so, which wines they will bottle. The harvest of 2018 has produced a...

Re: Vintage Port - Quo vadis?

I have a question first; What is the approximate percentage of total bottles that a typical producers retains after a release of a VP or SQVP? Is it 10%, 20%, more, less? Fantastic question. I do not think that many of the producers have a plan to have different badges of selling their Ports. With ...

Churchill Crusted Port Tasting 28 July

After having spent a night at marvelous Quinta da Gricha some three weeks ago with Churchill's winemaker Ricardo Nunes, I will defintely be there: https://churchills-port.com/lifestyle/explaining-crusted-new-virtual-tasting/ I believe Crusted Port is very much underrated and except Niepoort and Chur...

Vintage Port - Quo vadis?

I think everyone thought it cannot get more complicated than with 2015-2016-2017, but now 2018 is getting bottled and we have some who do not bottle, some who bottle Single Quinta, some full and some - at least - one major shipper to do both (for the first time ever?). Although many other wine regio...

Re: Port Shipped by Sail

Vale da Figueira Ports are ok, but not extraordinary. I dont see them benefiting from sailing to the UK, other than being exposed to heat and/or sun for some time.

They are a little higher than La Rosa on the same road. Owned by one of the Calem family members.

Re: Law of Two Thirds discussion

However, they were very clear that the law of two-thirds only applies to their sales of tawny Port and not to sales of VP and LBV. This would make sense if you look at tawny Port and the fact you need to have a good stock to be able to make quality blends. I'm not confident that the rules published...

Visited former Quinta do Convento two weeks ago. Will now be bottled as Kranemann. Very good Vintage Port 2018 and a beautiful estate:

Re: Lockdown Drinking

I have been exchanging with a wine-lover who happens to be my neighbour. We pour a full bottle and exchange half bottles blind without any announcement: Sometimes this is scary, because for two times we have exchanged the same produccer (mine was Beychevelle 83, his 98, mine was Carruades 99, his La...

"official" Vintage Port map (IVDP)

This will lead to some fantastic discussions.... Porttoportwine.jpg My little two cents: * What is the definition of a classic year? * I am missing 2015. * 1989 and 1978 - get out of here. I have never drank anything fantastic from these years. * Back to back years 91/92, 82/83? * I never heard that...
