...and still we come back to the fact that lots of exposure to air and wood develops wine faster that locking it up in a glass bottle.

But feel free to carry on...

2009 - girl Taylor's Vintage Port 2009 or Niepoort Bioma Vintage 2009. Any opinions which to choose? (I have actually bought both, and she will get the one members think best) If your 2009 granddaughter turns out to be reserved and traditional then the Taylor seems fitting. If she turns out to be o...

Is this the moment for a life-coach intervention?
The Chairman has issued a statement to the effect that he and the Board have complete faith in the Life Coach and his continued good influence on the situation.

Can I check that I have the correct list of people who have either replied in post or have replied to me by email as wanting to participate in our anniversary party on Wednesday night. I'm about to start committing to spend (and therefore collect) money. AHB - Wednesday to Saturday am MPM - Tuesday...

I am looking at this in terms of the initial period of maturation. For example: >> 5 years in wood will produce a wine that is red, semi-transparent very approachable >> 5 years in bottle will produce a thick, purple, sticky thing One is clearly developing faster than the other at that initial stag...

When port is maturing, does the process go faster in wood than in bottle?
I think some of the answers above don't really address the original question, that answer to which is "yes"

Re: «Wood years» vs «Bottle years»

I think the answer is an obvious yes, wine matures faster in wood (or, more precisely, when exposed to oxygen) that it does when locked in a glass bottle. Glenn is correct that they age "differently", in that the final product of oxidative and reductive ageing produces different characteristics, but...

Re: 80s Majors Matrix, Thursday 9 March 2017

A good summary from Phil. I do think the 80s decade is one of Port's weakest links. I think the line-up we had was probably at the top end of what to expect of each of those three vintages and only a handful of the wines could be classed as good to very good. My conclusion from the tasting is that I...
