Re: Vintage countdown 2018

Any news from the front line?

The Atlantic summer weather pattern seems to be breaking up early this year, with a clutch of systems forming. A Cat 2 hurricane called Helene looks particularly menacing, it's remnants could well dump a load of rain into Europe in about a week's time..

Re: Seeeking info : 1957 Cockburn vintage port

Welcome to the forum! There was quite a lot of Cockburn '55 made, bottled in 1957, but I have never heard of a Cockburn vintage port of the vintage 1957. Another possibility is that this might have been a Cockburn crusted port (normally a blend of vintages) bottled in 1957, although I've never spott...

Re: 1993 - A hunt

There is only one known declared vintage port from 1993, Q. Licieras, but it's really hard to find, and the only known stockist (in Portugal) is holding out for an absurd amount. There are a small number of LBVs also, and the Q. Crasto LBV is actually a decent wine, but again, hard to find. I am und...

Re: 2016 VP's - Wed 12 September

I suggest organising it as a self-pour walk around tasting. Put all the bottles on some tables at one end of the Red Room and people just help themselves to what they want, sitting down and taking notes as they wish.
That would work..

Re: 2016 VP's - Wed 12 September

The official blind tasting of the 2011 vintage in Porto had over 50 wines. Some thought it was too heavy a session, but I managed to keep my palate clear by drinking copious amounts of water, and by keeping reference glasses back from each flight was able to stop my opinion of the wines from driftin...

Re: Vintage countdown 2018

It's getting extremely hot out there.. - most quintas will probably see highs of over 40C today. Whilst a good burst of heat for a few days is a recurrent theme of great vintages, I wonder when 'hot' becomes 'too hot' for the vines? The Atlantic hurricane season is eerily calm meanwhile. There are s...

Re: Stacking cases more efficiently

Stacks make FIFO (First In First Out) difficult though. I tend to want to use the older bottles at the bottom first and it is a lot of work to take out the bottom bottle from a stack, and thus I prefer to have the cases on shelves. When stacks are needed same size does save a lot of space and are m...

Stacking cases more efficiently

As anyone who has any number of bottles knows, the mish-mash of port case designs can drive you up the wall when it comes to stacking them. As I have a bit of re-stacking to do, I've taken a little time out to see if there's any clever way of doing this more efficiently. Some observations.. It appea...

Vintage countdown 2018

As is fairly well known, the 2018 season got off to a really lousy start, leading to the expectation of low yields. Temperatures so far this summer have also been a little below long term averages. But... The Vila Real reporting station has not recorded any rain since June 11th and the Accuweather f...

Re: Cockburn Vertical, Tue 2nd Oct 2018

Regret Co '66 is just too scarce to liberate another one at this time.

Of the seven bottles I secured in 2011, four now remain.

Unless the Symingtons uncover a stash (at the last count, they were not aware of any) it's one per decade now, I think..

Re: Weighing in..

I have now weighed over 3000 of my bottles, those so far unweighed being almost entirely due to being still in their owcs. It's quite a therapeutic exercise, and not at all a chore. Whereas I would once struggle to see the level in a near opaque bottle, I am now quite content to merely weigh it, kno...
