Re: Volunteers sought..

There is 'stable' and.. a) 'stable - over very extended periods within the alcoholic soup of chemicals that undergoes a slow chemical transformation, known as wine' or b) 'stable within the chemical structure of a cork' The possibility of a slow degrading reaction between TCA and another chemical wi...

Volunteers sought..

Following on from a thread I started on another site - https://www.fortheloveofport.com/ftlopforum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=40628 - Could I ask for volunteers to do something rather simple? Next time you open a bottle and find it to be unmistakably corked, please don't throw it down the sink, but put it ...

Vintage countdown 2017

Well, the big news this year is just how early the vintage is. The winter was exceptionally wet, but from November through to May, every month was a little warmer than the long term average. June was slightly cooler however, and the searing temperatures seen elsewhere on the continent do not show up...

Re: Voice of the Vintage (1938), Gaumont-British

There is a massive amount or archive material in various forms that has never been catalogued or indexed into an internet searchable format. My factory site at Cambridge was a military installation during WWII and was probably surveyed by the Luftwaffe. Interested to know what it looked like at that...

Another way to tag bottles..

This is a rather neat way of tagging bottles.. Buy a stash of these el cheapo key rings: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Key-Ring-Tags-Mixed-Colours-Choose-from-5-10-20-50-100-200-tag-/310738820801?var=&hash=item48597a1ec1 Whip off the steel ring and replace with these 40 x 1.5 rubber bands, threaded thro...

A day of three surprises

Picked up a couple of boxes of (mostly) port from a house clearance sale on Friday, and yesterday got to have a look at them. Surprise 1 One of the bottles was an old (perhaps thirty years old) bottle of Taylor's white port. In addition to the selo the top of the bottle also had an old faded duty sl...

Re: Mystery bottle of ruby port

would you recommend decanting it first due to the significant amount of sediment? Yes. Either stand it upright and undisturbed for 24 hours to let the sediment settle, and then pour the wine off the sediment in one go, stopping when the first sediment appears in the neck, or stick some clean cheese...

I'm sorry your first reply is rather tardy, but your price expectation is much too high.

To give you an indication, I purchased a good bottle of this three weeks ago at auction for £85..

Re: Letter to Bishops on the bread and wine for the Eucharist

I vaguely recall being told many years ago that the standard CofE communion wine was a 50:50 mix of ruby port and tap water.

This would appear to fail the 'Vatican test' on two counts..

Re: A reliable company to collect and forward bottles won at Auction

The Somerset company seems to be well in with Strakers - I've used them a couple of times for small stashes and the bottles have arrived promptly and well packed.

Seems very odd that there should be two similarly named companies trading in the same sector..

Ten years on

So, TPF is ten years old, and with big thanks to Alex for organising things, we've had a couple of very enjoyable evenings in Porto to celebrate (and it's not over yet..) A lot of things have happened over the past decade, but one very basic one is that the 70's are now as old as the 60's were a dec...

A tragic year for fires

"At least 25 killed in Portugal forest fire"

The fire risk map currently shows most of the Douro as 'Maximo' risk and the rest 'Muito Elevado'

Their being sufficient leftovers from the tasting, my 50s era bottle of Gilbey's tawny returned home unscathed this morning, after staying up to watch the election results come in for a full two hours longer than my lightweight associates, and then walking the three miles from St James' square to Li...

Re: Thu 08 Jun - 67@50 2017

The last projection that I saw had the Conservatives with the largest number of seats, but 16 short of a majority. They could, possibly, run a minority government but it would be unstable and fractious. A Labour / SNP coalition would still be 19 short of a majority. This could be an interesting tim...
