Re: 2016 Declarations

Launching a full declaration is an expensive business with a large fixed cost that needs to be split across fewer cases. It's flawed logic - trying to charge more for less diminishes profit. With wine, the relationship between market interest and price is closer to logarithmic than linear - a much ...

Re: 2016 Declarations

Given eurozone inflation and changes in the exchange rate (taking the change in sterling to USD to reflect a global price outlook) one might expect a release price increase for the '16s of around 15% over the 2011s. First indications however are suggesting that release prices are being hiked by a wh...

Re: Latest buy

For those of us who have to buy retail it seems like there are some relatively good bargains to be had on the '77s now we're out of the 40th anniversary year '77 is a rare instance of a vintage that is still in ample supply on the secondary market after passing 40. '80 though is much scarcer and al...

Quinta de Roriz was made
Is Roriz now a full member of the Symington stable - or just an estate they manage? Was not sure if Johnny would count it as 'one of theirs'..

Have we a specific source for G and GST? At the BFT, whilst gently chastising Johnny Symington for killing off the Martinez brand, he mentioned that the Symingtons had declared nine VPs for 2016 I worked out these must be: Cockburn Dow Graham Graham Stone Terraces Smith Woodhouse Vesuvio Vesuvio Ca...

Vintage rankings

I've been dusting down and revising my vintage ranking list for the 60 years 1956 - 2015, prior to an update to bring in 2016 (and lose '56), once I've had more opportunities to try the '16s. I have ranked years on the basis of quality, consistency and number of declared ports, weighting those three...

Re: Selo under/over capsule

Probably a re-corked late release. If you look at the ones with the selo under the capsule, is there some seepage or crusting round the base of the foils?

The original corks on T77 were very poor quality.

Re: 1994; Where's the value?

Just to keep in mind when buying 1994: this is a year that is not at all, as you might think, generally good. Just about every vintage has its lemons, however a lot of wines that are perceived to be poor at that age come right when they turn 40. The '75 vintage was noted for weak performances from ...

Re: 1994; Where's the value?

Those Warre bottle matured LBVs and similar ones from other producers are offering a brilliant alternative to vintage port. They cellar well, they mature beautifully but slightly more quickly and they are remarkable value for money. They may not make for good drinking when they are 100 years old, b...

It's St George's day, and yes, Taylor have declared.

The websites of Taylor, Fonseca & Croft are all announcing the declaration of the 2016 vintage.

I've not found a TFP press release yet, and no word on Krohn

Re: Graham's Malvedos 1968

the Malvados 1968 is probably good and has a market value
A couple of years too late I fear for value - the 50th birthday market and general scarcity of anything from '68 will be pushing any that come to auction into orbit - the only one on wine searcher is being offered at £300..

Re: Tasting

I’ve always struggled to identify what I smell and taste by reference to other things. Yes, it's a distraction beloved of wine writers needing to fill column inches. It also helps them convey an impression of expertise, when that is lacking. Too many people judge wines by their label and price tag,...

Re: 2016 Declarations

A Quinta gives one a story to tell, a place for people to see, a place for people to romanticize about If you researched the blending history of the 'estateless' names, you would probably find a quinta or two that had almost always contributed to the blend, so if that was a concern, a 'home quinta'...
