PS: wine sediment is (I think) invariably denser than the wine itself - methinks Sideways has picked up an old wives tale... As I immediately suspected.... but there may be something in it if you consider its history... So what do we know? Crusted Port was invented by English wine merchants when po...

I recall reading something about the Crusted Port style being developed to aid long shipping journeys, a layer of 'crust' atop the wine in barrel helped prevent spoiling on long journeys. I remember thinking at the time- surely a ship on the ocean wave is far from 'stable' and the crust would be bro...

I can’t say I love Port with a passion, yet. I do love (table) wine though, first succumbing to its charm in my college days when my local Unwins sold a white wine by the name of La Mancha for £1.99, a most agreeable price for a poor student living in the smoke. It was several years later before I d...

An interesting red.

I enjoyed this inexpensive red wine recently, available from Waitrose.

Give it a go and let me know what you think...

I fear this question is misleading, it’s like asking ‘Does one hate Port?’ There are several Peanut Butter producers, Sunpat being one, who tend their ware with the utmost love and attention resulting in a smooth, creamy, well-balance peanut butter that, when spread across hot toast, is heavenly wit...

I too enjoy paying close attention to the colour of the wine / port in my glass. Also, I believe an unusual glass design can further enhance the enjoyment. I love to sit in front of an open fire drinking wine from either a cut/etched glass and watch the colours dance, I don’t get the same enjoyment ...

Re: How much was it? (IAMFI.)

Sounds very worthwhile. How much was it? (IAMFI.) Usuall price is around £16~£17, Oddbins, Sains & Tesco. However, my local store was recently selling it 'reduced to clear' for £7.90! I cleared the shelf, I have two more bottles of the '92 and six bottles of the '95. Sadly, there were no '94's ...

1992 Warre LBV (unfiltered)

1992 Warre Traditional LBV Decanted four hours before tasting. Fine, powdery sediment, less than I was expecting. Colour is bright, rich and deep, like a well-polished blackcurrant. A quick fade towards the rim with just the tiniest hint of blue. Powdered coffee, a little heat and vanilla on the no...

Brakspear Organic Beer, widely available. Clean tasting, hoppy aroma, well balanced with a moderate, toffee & bitter-honey finish. As English as squashing wasp's in August. Lovely.

Re: First-timers

Even if I were free, I feel I am one or two offlines away from having the confidence to attend, its not that I fear I would ‘get in the way’, I’m sure I would enjoy it and everyone would be welcoming but I would prefer it if I was able to contribute something to the evening in the way of personal e...

Thanks, a very informative post.

Would your approach to decanting differ if the wine was an unfiltered LBV?
