Re: Dows 1960

Hi I have a nice dusty unopened bottle of Dows 1960 vintage port. Unfortunately 3/4 of it has leaked, although i cant see a hole in the top Just wondering is it still worth anything to sell? Kind regards Dave Any leakage devalues a bottle; substantial leakage will generally make it valueless unless ...

I would be too scared to describe my mother-in-law as "fabulous, but slightly faded"
Perhaps the Red Queen might be more appropriate in your case then? Could be an old crusted with plenty of power and acidity?

Re: Vintage port terrible teens?

Here's my question: When will I know when my port has entered those teen years? Is there a general rule of thumb, or does it depend on the producer and the vintage? Welcome to :tpf: and what an excellent starting question, which I think would get many different replies from both ourselves and the p...

Re: Wed 20th Feb 2019, Emergency

No chance for me I'm afraid due to half-term commitments. That's a great idea for Dirk: a wine called The Mother-in-Law. Perhaps "The Duchess" (a fabulous, but slightly faded LBV) would be more in keeping with the Niepoortland series; though I always hoped Dirk might add a Caterpillar-based port to ...

Re: RE: Re: Sell collection

OK, here is how it worked out. K&L Wines paid $6800 for the 54 bottles. That is about 82% of the lowest US retail (non-EU, non-auction) and about 35% less than I expect they will sell them for. They have a pretty good rep, so they can ask a bit more than other retailers. And they are local to me, s...

I've just thought what I can bring - a bottle of 1996 FG; 1996 being almost 1969. You now have 68 attempts remaining. Does this scupper my idea of bringing a 1960? :x Not at all, with the assumed justification of "it has a 6 and a 9 in it". There was nothing wrong with FG96 either, on the same basi...

Perhaps 3 bottles of FG 1996, since they will be 69 years old between them. Although technically the brief is "a" bottle of port, so perhaps not.
Though if you had a tregnum...

Tue 29th October 2019 - "69"

Half-term comes early this year, which makes a tasting celebrating my 50th in London possible without colliding with my wife's birthday, half term, or bonfire night; I therefore propose to organise a tasting on Tuesday 29th Oct at B&F. Date: Tue 29 Oct 2019 Time: 6pm Location: B&F Theme "69" - bring...

Re: Pointless Statistics

As I enjoy reading the same from others, here is my own updated cellar stats looking back over the last year. At the of the start of 2019, my cellar comprises the following (2018 values in brackets for comparison): Port by type: 80% Vintage/SQVP (81%) 7% LBV (9%) 3% Crusted (3%) 10% Tawny/colheita/w...

Re: Level detector?

So if all goes well, we just have to mount the laser table in some form of portable unit like a backpack with connected hand instrument, and probably wear protective goggles; likely we'd also need a protective suit for health and safety in case of contaminated bottles or breakage. Then we'd be suita...

I haven't been buying a lot in the last few years, but this isn't my experience!
Agreed. Perhaps it more reflects a more accurate assessment following 2017/prior over-estimation, rather than any recent drop. Very interesting to see the assessment comparison however.

Re: Help with unlabeled bottle

As Andy mentions, since this bottle has a T-stopper, this will be a port which was originally intended for immediate drinking, such as a simple ruby, ruby reserve, or a filtered LBV. Such ports were not intended for aging in the bottle, and will degrade slowly over time, however as long as stored we...

Personally, I'd stop at the 85; I might have been tempted to include 94, but not 2000.

I can't make it, but there is already an emergency next Tue, if you haven't seen.
