Hi Wolfgang; obviously would love you to join us, but I will need to check whether we can move into the red room (if it is still available). Will let you know ASAP tomorrow.

Re: Port and the Ashes

Anyone else enjoying the fact Sky have lost their monopoly? No, the opposite here. While competition is generally better than a monopoly, the current consequence is that my wife (the sports fan) now wants us to pay for both BT Sport and Sky Sports because they now have half-each of the wanted event...

Alex is in. Mark my words. And a good thing too. Excellent. Phil: who would you like to make the placemats? I’m willing, but you are also capable. If you're happy to, please do. I've made the executive decision to include the CáF58, CáF66 and CáF80, and made a nominal assignment for who to bring wh...

Re: Wed 29th Nov 2017 - A Cálem (mini-)vertical

We are booked for the Wed 29th, currently nominally in green room (as there are only seven/eight of us) but will be in red if there is no other booking in the interim, or if our numbers increase and red is still available. I currently propose we will have at least the following: 60, 63, 63(Foz), 70,...

Re: Rare Port for sale

I am afraid that I am unfamiliar with the term "Colheita". Please elaborate for me. A Colheita port is essentially a tawny port made from a specific year (compared with most tawny ports which are blends from multiple years). However, I would guess that your Niepoort '52 is most likely a "Garrafeira...

Re: (28 or 29) Nov 2017 - TBD

Phil, the fact that you're up for these dates is a relievingly positive sign Indeed, though more a deferral than progress on the issue. I've been looking forward to the long awaited Ca vertical for some time but maybe given the likely number of attendees maybe it's worth keeping this one dry until ...

Hi, and welcome to :tpf:; we can certainly try and help identify and understand what you have, if you're able to post some images. It would also be worth saying where you are located, and how/where the bottles have been stored, to help assess the bottles and provide advice on possible selling option...

This is being shifted to January. ok. If that means there is now no tasting planned that week, perhaps I should start a new one (on Tue/Wed)? I am likely to be either having or recovering from knee replacements in January so my place should be given to someone who can walk from the tube station to ...

Re: Thu 30 Nov 2017, Sandemans and 1970s (for the Placemat Software’s 15th anniversary)

Well, it seems your options are to either change the venue, or change the date. Since people may have made arrangements already, changing the venue seems like the better choice (and AHB has provided some decent suggestions). If, on the other hand, you were to change the date... the Tuesday would loo...

1970 Butler Nephew

Opened this evening, because... why not! Dark (80% opaque), light nose of candy and vanilla. I *think* my first tasting of this wine. D+2h : Very (very!) sweet; seems much sweeter than Graham '70. Very full; clearly a well-kept bottle, with serious backbone - a la the best kept F70 - though not the ...

Re: RE: Re: One quiz at a time

Interesting, I haven't heard of this before. If the radius of the earth is roughly 2^23m, then a translation from longitude/latitude for a single location to 3m x 3m accuracy would require a 2^46 (or less if not mapping oceans) value or less depe; presumably reducing this to 3 indexes of 2^15 (32k) ...

Re: One quiz at a time

Some vague thoughts in case it helps anyone else. The thoughts I have at the moment are around conversion from word lengths, so "cafe humid palace" being 4 5 6 etc. Looking at all the above sequences in that way, they could all be times (4:56, 5:44, 15:46) or post numbers (456, 544, 1546) but having...

I know what you mean, but don't think so - it matches the outline colours at the edge of the label too well, and lacks the blocking for compression artifact.

Re: Possible fake 1927 VP in Belgium auction this weekend

It's certainly an odd one; my thoughts: - It is quite unlike any other RO/RCV label I have seen (noting that I have only seen a dozen or so pre-1950 RO/RCV labels, to be fair) - The capsule is surprisingly intricate for a fake which does not seem to match a previous bottling (as far as I am aware); ...

Since I don't think anyone has said what you drank last night as yet: I would have proposed Warre for the monkey's guess of shipper the to get better coverage of likely LBVs as well as possible VP; and while normally would have guessed '70 for decent mature VP, but with the mini-'70 horizontal in a ...

Unfortunately I can no longer make this evening which, given the theme, I am gutted about. Better move me to the "Would like to, but can't" list. Sorry folks, the Graham 1970 is now needed to console me in my sadness at missing what will be a collection of no doubt fabulous, vintage ports. I opened...
