Re: Garrafeira "15"

From the fact that the bottle has a selo (the paper label over the cork under the capsule) and given the styling of selo and label, I would guess this to be a ~15yr-old tawny bottled sometime in the '60s; if so, then Alex's comments and estimates seem fair. If you're based in Harlow and looking for ...

If someone had a micro-USB charger handy and were able to bring it along to the B&F tonight, that would be helpful and appreciated.

Seeing the tasting note up already, I thought you'd been unable to restrain yourself and had opened the bottle already, perhaps bringing an alternative on Thursday :)

Food order updated. Failing cogent objection by 6pm Sunday 11th, it will be sent to the B&F.

Those expressing enthusiasm for a £120 steak: how many ways are you wanting to split it?

happy with 2, 3, or 4 as best fits group with what we've ordered. Ideal would perhaps be 3 imo.

Please see below the pricing for the steaks ordered, just let me know if all OK: Chateaubriand 1kg (to share) = £120 Chateaubriand 500g = £60 Centre Cut Fillet Steaks = £34 400g Beef rib-eye = £34 T-bone steak =£34 Rump steak = £28 I'd assumed the 500g chateaubriand to share (as linked, didn't know...

Re: The wine shed - a concept, and some horrible maths..

I tried Googling the term 'phase effect' and found nothing. Although my word 'hysteresis' is used in other branches of physics, it's dictionary definition reads: " the phenomenon in which the value of a physical property lags behind changes in the effect causing it " - which seems about right to me...

Re: The wine shed - a concept, and some horrible maths..

Some maths. Having worked through some partial differential equations, for the simplified one-dimensional case the final equations seem to be as follows. For an incident temperature sine wave at the exterior surface, the temperature at a depth below this surface is given by: T(x) = A + B.e^(-x.sqrt(...

"Black and rare" would be my ideal, but am happy to be flexible as best fits us all (with a steak that thick, black and blue can still be a little cool in the middle if they haven't warmed slightly).

I'm not especially bothered about it being "blue" (since that's just a consequence of our choice of calendar and dateline etc), but I'd be interested to know when the next super blood moon will occur which will be visible in the UK.

While I understand the colloquial use of "once in a blue moon", I did not know that this related to an actual lunar phenomena (the t...

Please order food and reveal Port. Port: Niepoort 1970 (dumpy). Re: Thu 18 Jan 2018, Mostly 1982s, at Bar Douro

Nobody has said much yet about last week's tasting; is this because it was a disaster or so fabulous it can't be put into words? How well did Bar Douro work as a venue for tasting? i.e. how was it for space (any photos?), was the area crowded/noisy, hot/cold, what limits for numbers or rooms/tables ...

I have little knowledge regarding weevils; but the corks in the bad bottles at the Xmas tasting were certainly very damaged by something, such that from the exterior of the bottle there were ragged pieces missing. From elsewhere I note that there are a number of insects which might attack corks wher...

Re: Thu 21 Dec 2017, Unknown shippers and peculiar friends, White Horse in Newport

A very interesting evening, with an unusually polarised span of port quality: of the thirteen bottles tasted, at the top (for me - as I don't have a copy of the voting sheet) we had fantastic bottles of S12, G27, Mz17 and G42, while at the bottom we had five bottles which were revolting and undrinka...
