Re: RE: Re: Tue 11 Jun 2019 — 1994 Mini Horizontal

I would like this tasting to be semi blind. I think it makes sense for everyone to declare what they bring so we get a good selection and avoid me doing the usual of guessing it’s a different port when it is the same. Excellent, and my preferred alternative as it happens. The usual way to achieve t...

Re: Tue 11 Jun 2019 — 1994 Mini Horizontal

Ahem. CMAG was suggesting we do this blind. So we will have one bottle out of twelve that is known to be there and none of us except the Monkey will guess which it is. That depends how the organiser chooses to run this. We will all know at least one producer which is present (which we have supplied...

Re: 1977 Warre

This does not sound typical of this wine. In my experience Warre '77 can vary somewhat, but I would expect it to be a good medium/dark red colour still, and not oxidised. Since I hadn't opened on for a while, I've just decanted one; pics below for your colour comparison (against white tile), or atta...

Re: 2018 Offline Summary

An idea for another slightly different tasting: "Battle of the blends" Primarily to include cross-producer blends, such as: - Any Factory House vintages - Any Avery VP blends - Others? Depending on number of people/ports, we could extend the any VP blends, i.e. to include crusted, perhaps with limit...

Re: Do we need a 1966 Horizontal?

Two minor edits: the early weeks of Sep are erroneous as shown currently - both of "PW not avail 15th" and "DRT not avail 8th" are for Oct (not Sep), which would also make w/c Sep 9 empty, though I agree that w/c 10 Jun would be a good choice if DRT available then.

Re: Do we need a 1966 Horizontal?

I don't think we need to push it out that far. Deliberately ignoring July and August as too hot and holiday season, we don't currently have that many tastings planned this year, with nothing in June, (July, August), September or the first half of October. It would seem better to me to have a tasting...

I think October would be good.

Does Tuesday the 15th work?
Not for me sadly, as that's my wife's birthday. A week earlier (the 8th) would work; a week later would be right next to my own birthday tasting.

We haven't mentioned early June? Either of weeks starting Jun 3rd or 10th might work? (agree May not viable)

Re: Vintage port terrible teens?

Others now seem to share this restraint - when organising an Offley vertical last December, I found there was no enthusiasm for including vintages more recent than 1985.. So it appears that some of my more recent purchases might be gifts for my children... Well, you did say you were intending to dr...

Re: 1969 Taylor Fladgate Quinta de Vargellas Vintage Port

Hi Claire, 1969 is not a great year for port and there was consequently only a single producer who actually sold a vintage port from that year, Taylor Quinta de Vargellas. Up until a couple of years ago, that bottle would retail for ~£80, but the price is higher right now as this is the 50th anniver...

Hi I have a nice dusty unopened bottle of Dows 1960 vintage port. Unfortunately 3/4 of it has leaked, although i cant see a hole in the top Just wondering is it still worth anything to sell? Kind regards Dave Any leakage devalues a bottle; substantial leakage will generally make it valueless unless ...

Perhaps the Red Queen might be more appropriate in your case then? Could be an old crusted with plenty of power and acidity?

Re: Vintage port terrible teens?

Here's my question: When will I know when my port has entered those teen years? Is there a general rule of thumb, or does it depend on the producer and the vintage? Welcome to :tpf: and what an excellent starting question, which I think would get many different replies from both ourselves and the p...

Re: Wed 20th Feb 2019, Emergency

No chance for me I'm afraid due to half-term commitments. That's a great idea for Dirk: a wine called The Mother-in-Law. Perhaps "The Duchess" (a fabulous, but slightly faded LBV) would be more in keeping with the Niepoortland series; though I always hoped Dirk might add a Caterpillar-based port to ...
