Re: Cork Weevil

I have little knowledge regarding weevils; but the corks in the bad bottles at the Xmas tasting were certainly very damaged by something, such that from the exterior of the bottle there were ragged pieces missing. From elsewhere I note that there are a number of insects which might attack corks wher...

Re: Thu 21 Dec 2017, Unknown shippers and peculiar friends, White Horse in Newport

A very interesting evening, with an unusually polarised span of port quality: of the thirteen bottles tasted, at the top (for me - as I don't have a copy of the voting sheet) we had fantastic bottles of S12, G27, Mz17 and G42, while at the bottom we had five bottles which were revolting and undrinka...

Superb, fabulous, dark, spicy, red cherry; originally believed Fonseca, which I could have believed, but clearly not from cork; understood to have been later decoded as Martinez.

Very fresh, light grapefruit(!) and light toffee elements to the taste, with some light orange coming through later; old and gentle, and an interesting bottle to taste; would love to know what it was.

Absolutely fabulous - dark, spicy, delicious, full, sweet, very soft, lovely; less backbone, more sweetness than F27 yesterday.
Per Flash's comment above, the second half of AHB's tasting note mirrors my experience, not the first.

Soft, lovely, light red cherries, very tasty. One attendee commented that "if you don't think this is the best port here, then you're an idiot" :) An excellent port certainly, but for me exceeded by three others present; ah well, I'll be over there in the corner - along with AHB it seems (unfortunat...

Re: We need some tastings in the diary

Apr - Bring a bottle to share with Derek's new Knees Given the theme, perhaps similar yet slightly different "pairs" of bottles would be appropriate? There are several ways I can think of immediately as possibilities, such as: vintage/vintage from same shipper and year with different blends (e.g. T...

Re: Thu 15 Feb 2018: Mr. Wolfgang Stars

There is the tiniest of tiny chances that I might be able to attend, though it's not likely right now. However, even if not present I will most definitely toast the event remotely, and am very happy that Wolfgang will continue to be with us. PS. Do you let everyone pass these days? How much more ger...

Re: Cavendish vintage 1949 vin de liqueur

If this is what I think it is (please post a photo if you want us to verify) then this is port-like wine from South Africa, and is a 30yr tawny-style wine. If so then it will probably have been bottled in 1979, and while intended for immediate drinking at that time, should still be drinkable now as ...

Full, dark; a touch dry mid-palate, lovely flavour, some dry tabacco, slight acidity on aftertaste. A good port, but overshadowed by its company. Also a wine which had been on my "unicorn list" (wines I would love to try, but thought I might never get the chance to), so very pleased to have had the ...

Dark and fabulous, deep, spicy; classic Taylor profile. In exceptionally good condition, though for me bettered significantly by the Fonseca, and very slightly by the Martinez, probably due to my flavour profile preferences.

Immediately post-decant this had good flavour, slight acid on finish; fell apart very quickly. I suspect Alex's note may reflect the wine at 30mins+, at which point what started out as good flavour has disappeared behind the bitterness and heat that appeared.
