Re: Voice of the Vintage (1938), Gaumont-British

No luck searching here, though one possible source might be the Gaumont Pathe archive of Gaumont documentaries. Online video search/access is only available to registered news personnel, but direct contact to the organisation might be worth a try.

Re: Summer Thirst, Wednesday 9th August 2017

We should rename this thread into thirst in the rain! Rain? What is rain? I have heard stories, handed down from generation to generation, of this weather phenomenon. But it is merely a myth; a story told to young children to give them hope. Our "summer" weather yesterday was around 30mm of rain an...

Thanks for your replies. I understand what you are saying but they have leaked only a quarter in over 20 years. So much so the leak has never been noticed. Hi Billy, First let me applaud you being open and honest on the condition of the bottles regarding fill levels and leaks. I also like your enth...

1983 Rebello Valente

I've very much enjoyed the few Rebello Valente vintages I have had the opportunity to try, not seen very often in the UK, and this half-bottle was given to me by someone who knew that (thank you again, if you're reading this!). I had not tried the RV83 before, and considering ’83 overall to be a gen...

Re: Can anyone help us?

I can't see a "Garret" or "Garett" (you've provided two different spellings above); could it be "Garnett Bros." (later "Garnetts" - no apostrophe), a Wine and Spirits merchant of Sheffield? They were trading across across the required date, though I have no idea if they were substantial enough to ha...

From a BBC article entitled "Drinking a few times a week 'reduces diabetes risk'" :

"The researchers concluded that drinking moderately three to four times a week reduced a woman's risk of diabetes by 32% while it lowered a man's by 27%, compared with people drinking on less than one day a week."

Re: Couriers

(not wine-specific) Is it just me, or does there seem to have been a general reduction in quality of the services of many of the couriers over the last year? Recent issues have included: - "deliver by noon" - arriving around 4pm (interestingly, the website tracking changed status from "scheduled for...

Hi cstuart, welcome to :tpf: . I can understand your dilemma; perhaps a compromise approach might work, drink most of them and take 1 or 2 back to share with the children? I'm assuming that if you wrap them well and take them in your checked luggage, such a small quantity might be allowed and avoid ...

And I have just decanted a Fonseca 70, an Irish bottling, which at D+1hr is utterly fantastic - possibly one of the best F70s I've tasted. Steak soon, with cheese and biscuits to follow, including some Montagnolo Affine. It's going to be a good evening :)

I believe that port has quite commonly been used for communion wine, at least in Anglican churches.

Meeting up with Francesca

Damn, I must be feeling port-starved. I just received a spam email with the subject line "Meeting up with Francesca" which I glanced at, having mis-read the subject line as "Meeting up with Fonseca" - how disappointed I was when I realised my mistake! I think there might be some vintage port opened ...

Hi TupperS, welcome to :tpf: I'm not sure whether you've seen our ‘Standard advice to would-be vendors’ , if not it's worth a read. I admit that having guessed that, I wasn't sure the colour was quite right for SL - a little too red, perhaps more like a Sandeman 40yr?

I would like to, but there is now a very strong possibility that I will be generally unable to make Thursday evenings during term-time; better down-grade me to maybe/reserve for now; will confirm either way once certain.

Re: Quantifying opacity in TNs

I would also suggest a slightly less linear scale (perhaps log, or another) - or at least to try one in comparison to linear; or alternatively perhaps just linear expansion of the 0-5 region, as I suspect that dependent on the environmental light level, most of the judgement will be around the 1-3 r...
