Re: 1994s, B&F, Tue 26 Mar 2024
Is there a better modern Vintage than 1994? Perhaps 2011? So let me ask a question. If I were to give you a bottle of Port to drink this weekend, with the producer chosen at random, which vintage would you prefer me to select from if I limit your choice to the 1980s or 1990s? It's hard to say for s...

Re: 1994s, Tue 26 Mar 2024
I look forward to everyone's notes! We are doing a significant horizontal of 1994 the first week of August. Probably 26 bottles over 2 sessions. We have, I think, 30 or 32 bottles available but some just aren't worth including. Which bottles won't make the cut? Currently not included: Niepoort Niep...

Re: 1994 Graham
That sounds more that slightly imperfect to me. None of the bolded descriptors should normally apply to a 1994 Graham. Or really any Graham.
Unfortunate.

Re: A Rare Wine on a Rare Date - Carcavelos back to 1906
I believe it was Will W. who introduced me to Carcavelos. I went out and purchased a couple of bottles of the Villa Oeiras 15YO and still have 1 left. It's a very nice wine, and given the usual gap between our scores I think we are in agreement about its quality.

Re: London in May
I realize that it is a super touristy thing to do, but ... I have time. So ... is it worthwhile and do I need some kind of reservation to tour the Tower of London? And perhaps more specifically, do any of you recommend any tour provider over the others? Despite having worked in London for 30+ years...

Re: London in May
Coming in to the UK the duty free limit is 12 x 75cl of Port per adult. In theory, if you have more than that you need to use the red channel and declare the excess. The only time since Brexit that I tried to use the red channel I waited about 10 minutes for someone to appear before giving up and w...

Re: London in May
When traveling from London to Porto with wine in your suitcase... how does that work? Do you have to declare it, or can you just breeze right through Customs without having to worry about it?

These sound like amazing wines, but at that price for a half bottle they're completely out of my range.

Bottle has been ordered from Garrafeira Nacional. Thanks to Alex for the assist!
Sadly they had only 1 bottle or I would have purchased a second to bring to London for the vertical on May 14.

Re: 1957 Graham
Not in the bible? Outrageous. Just checked. There's a 1957 Graham's Malvedos, but not a general Graham's. 3rd edition needed! My bet would be that it is the Graham's Malvedos (at that time a second label not a single quinta) that has been labelled Graham's for a particular market. We're in the proc...

Re: 1957 Graham
Garrafeira Nacional in Lisbon has one listed. I'm going to enquire about it to see if they have any further information, because the label is damaged so you can't actually see that it's a 1957. The last digit is destroyed, so that label could be a 1955. I'm hoping they can send me a picture of the c...

Re: Quinta do Vesuvio in February 2024 - 6th Feb
Just buy more 1994. Thanks George. I have at least 19 bottles of the '94 maybe more. I'll know when I do my inventory in a few months. And you don't have to convince me to buy more, the problem right now is the Mrs. might disagree. But it is an excellent Port. Thanks for the scoresheet! Similar pro...

Re: London in May
Over the years, particularly while we were doing virtual tastings during COVID, I may have promised to bring various bottles to open with various members of TPF the next time I'm in London. This trip is that next time. Sadly, I seem to have forgotten all but one promise, and the recipient of the one...

Re: Is 30yo VP darker than it used to be?
A guess, to which I am probably wrong and if so please say so. I'd theorize it is due to block planting and the reduced use of the old field blends. The latter of which contained white grapes and all sorts of different types of red grapes not necessarily picked at their peak of ripeness. With block...

Re: Quinta do Vesuvio in February 2024 - 6th Feb
I haven't had V05 in many years, but my experience with it says that a somewhat shorter decant should work fine. It's a somewhat softer Port than the '03 or '07 but still very delicious. I would probably decant it 4-6 hours, but as I recall you guys tend to use shorter decants in London than we do i...

The 2007 Sandeman VP is also pretty spectacular, though on release I could barely taste it because it was so tannic. 2003 Taylor - this is filtered, but aged extremely well 2011 Crasto 2012 Carvalhas 2015 Graham All pretty spectacular LBVs for me, at least. I don't drink that much LBV (why bother wh...
