Re: 2016 Declarations

Given eurozone inflation and changes in the exchange rate (taking the change in sterling to USD to reflect a global price outlook) one might expect a release price increase for the '16s of around 15% over the 2011s. First indications however are suggesting that release prices are being hiked by a w...

Re: 2016 Vintage Port Preview Tasting and other Ports and Douro wines

I believe these all should be on offer by later this month or early next. I don't see them lasting much beyond summer before they all sale through. So I wouldn't wait if you're gonna order some.

Re: 2016 Vintage Port Preview Tasting and other Ports and Douro wines

I attended the NY tasting, I much prefered the Dow's and the Graham's Stone terraces as my top two of the vintage. The noval was solid like previous years. I'm shocked at the black pepper notes from the Fonseca as the 97, 2000, 2003 had a beautiful fleshy peach note that has been absent in the 07,0...

Re: 2016 Declarations

Quinta de Roriz was made Is Roriz now a full member of the Symington stable - or just an estate they manage? Was not sure if Johnny would count it as 'one of theirs'.. I think it still is a partnership with the Prats family. I recall an interview Bruno Prats did about the Estate sometime last year ...

Re: 2016 Declarations

Have we a specific source for G and GST? At the BFT, whilst gently chastising Johnny Symington for killing off the Martinez brand, he mentioned that the Symingtons had declared nine VPs for 2016 I worked out these must be: Cockburn Dow Graham Graham Stone Terraces Smith Woodhouse Vesuvio Vesuvio Ca...

2016 Vintage Port Preview Tasting and other Ports and Douro wines

I'm not sure if this belongs here or in a different sub-forum. If so, Mod's please move or send off into individual tasting notes or however you see fit. Re: 1994; Where's the value?

Just to keep in mind when buying 1994: this is a year that is not at all, as you might think, generally good. Just about every vintage has its lemons, however a lot of wines that are perceived to be poor at that age come right when they turn 40. The '75 vintage was noted for weak performances from ...

Re: Tasting

I’ve always struggled to identify what I smell and taste by reference to other things. Yes, it's a distraction beloved of wine writers needing to fill column inches. It also helps them convey an impression of expertise, when that is lacking. Too many people judge wines by their label and price tag,...

Re: 2016 Declarations

Am I right in thinking none of QH, Mz or GC had an associated Quinta? I think that is quite significant. Anything produced under any of these brands would now be "a port wine produced from grapes/wines sourced from various places". What would be distinctive about say, Martinez versus Gould Campbell...

Re: Crusted Port Wine Malvedos 1958 in Magnum format

It looks genuine to me. A little known fact is that in the early days of the use of the brand "Malvedos" the wines didn't come from the quinta - they were from vineyards in the Torto valley. This is probably from that era. And many of the grapes came from a number of adjacent vineyards which were n...

Your post wasn't deleted, it's in the Forum "SELLING PORT" for selling bottles. Some people have inquired about it. I would point you to that forum and your original post. http://theportforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=12371

Re: 9 Bottles of Vintage Port For Sale

Hi Irl, As one of the few USA based folks here I'll chime in. First, the bottles location at this time of year makes shipping very problematic. Most areas, sans the northeast which seems to be perpetually frozen lately, is now entering the "Too hot to ship" season. So that will make selling them at ...

Re: The philosophy of drinking old port

I assume you mean bottled in the 19th century, as Tawny's of this age are usually spectacular and bottle aged ones not so much as you describe. I tend to agree with your train of thought. I prefer to enjoy them with other very old Ports of somewhat similar age. As you mention, these tend to be more ...

Re: Sandeman's Partners' Port, how old is this?

As Phil mentioned. There was no set rule to mandate a switch. One just had to use up what they had then move on to the new ones. It's quite rare for anything past about 74 to have the old Selo. But it is Port so exceptions abound. BTW, there are also '77 Niepoort's with the new Selo too.

Probably a stupid question, but being as I'm from this side of the pond and I don't know I'll ask. Who's in the picture above the fireplace? That's Wolfgang wearing the outfit he had to put on for the final ceremony where he swore allegiance to the Queen, the whole Queen and nothing but the Queen. ...

Re: Deep thought..

I can't remember how many bottles of Fonseca 1970 or 1985 were filled in 1972 or 1987, but I know it was a lot — let's say it was 10,000 12 bottle cases of each. That means in 2020 we'd expect there still to be around 1,250 cases of each in 2020 / 2035. That seems reasonable. I have a case of F70 a...

Re: Sandeman's Partners' Port, how old is this?

It is a basic (inexpensive) Ruby Port, bottled sometime around the very early 1970's or earlier. It is worth basically nothing. Depending on how it's been stored it may still be drinkable, but you better have a backup bottle just in case. These were made to be consumed within a couple years of being...
