Re: Benchmark got a load of port

Their pricing is horrible 98% of the time. Massive mark ups. As for these lots. I’d assume it’s all from the same person for the ports. If so, look at how many leakers there are. Obviously poor storage which is a real shame. I got the email and the poor descriptions were a huge turn off. Sent from m...

Re: Vintage countdown 2018

It's getting extremely hot out there.. - most quintas will probably see highs of over 40C today. Whilst a good burst of heat for a few days is a recurrent theme of great vintages, I wonder when 'hot' becomes 'too hot' for the vines? .... Depends on the type of grape vine. However, generally speakin...

Worth every penny. I use mine a lot. Basically anything around 15-20 years or more gets the Durant.

Re: Valuation???

Thank you... Do you know how to sell it in US? The states are complicated as every state has different laws and shipping wine as a private person is even more difficult (as in if you ship it illegally they confiscate it and destroy it if they find it). Add in no shipping until at least October too ...

Re: Buying LBV

I think, but can't be certain, that Noval make both a filtered LBV and one which is intended to be able to age. Warre certainly do, so beware which you buy. Correct, Noval makes both a filtered and unfiltered LBV. Most of the filtered is for airlines (and the like) and IIRC the Netherlands or some ...

Re: Best time to visit Porto/Douro?

Anytime except when Europeans are on their holiday there LOL. :O Am imagining the response if I replied to the same question posted on ftlop with "anytime the Americans are not there" ;p It’s a bit of a joke and also serious. The Douro and Porto are overrun by tourists now, mostly Europeans. For th...

I’ve never seen a Cockburn with that color (what appears to be a newer) wax seal and a Selo on top of it. Beware.

Re: Lbv vs vintage

... So my understanding is that the grapes are harvested and then made into port, vintage and lbv, I had assumed the same grapes for the vintage port would be used for the lbv, is that not the case? So the best grapes are used for vintage port and then the next best used for the lpv hence the cheap...

2005 Niepoort Redoma Reserva Branco Douro

Recent bottles of this I've had have shown some early oxidation creeping in, so today I pulled my remaining 5 bottles out of storage, all bought on release. While there is just a touch of oxidation, this still has wonderful minerality, pineapple, citrus fruit, and an oily texture aiding its depth. A...

2006 Quinta do Crasto Reserva Old Vine Douro

Lets address the elephant in the room first. This is a vintage that many critics panned as being not good. But what many of them forget is the Douro is a big place with tons of micro climates. So even in the tough years someone almost always makes a good wine. Decanted 3 hours, this still has fresh ...

Re: 2016 Vintage Port Preview Tasting and other Ports and Douro wines

Alex, Nice notes, thanks!! I don't think we are too far off what we like when it comes to young Ports and scoring. However, it's hard to compare someone else's notes when they taste them at a different time. The simple reason being that when this young VP can show so very differently on different da...

Re: 2016 Declarations

Given eurozone inflation and changes in the exchange rate (taking the change in sterling to USD to reflect a global price outlook) one might expect a release price increase for the '16s of around 15% over the 2011s. First indications however are suggesting that release prices are being hiked by a w...

I believe these all should be on offer by later this month or early next. I don't see them lasting much beyond summer before they all sale through. So I wouldn't wait if you're gonna order some.

Re: 2016 Vintage Port Preview Tasting and other Ports and Douro wines

I attended the NY tasting, I much prefered the Dow's and the Graham's Stone terraces as my top two of the vintage. The noval was solid like previous years. I'm shocked at the black pepper notes from the Fonseca as the 97, 2000, 2003 had a beautiful fleshy peach note that has been absent in the 07,0...

Quinta de Roriz was made Is Roriz now a full member of the Symington stable - or just an estate they manage? Was not sure if Johnny would count it as 'one of theirs'.. Re: 1994; Where's the value?

Just to keep in mind when buying 1994: this is a year that is not at all, as you might think, generally good. Just about every vintage has its lemons, however a lot of wines that are perceived to be poor at that age come right when they turn 40. The '75 vintage was noted for weak performances from ...

Re: Tasting

I’ve always struggled to identify what I smell and taste by reference to other things. Yes, it's a distraction beloved of wine writers needing to fill column inches. It also helps them convey an impression of expertise, when that is lacking. Too many people judge wines by their label and price tag,...

Re: 2016 Declarations

Am I right in thinking none of QH, Mz or GC had an associated Quinta? I think that is quite significant. Anything produced under any of these brands would now be "a port wine produced from grapes/wines sourced from various places". What would be distinctive about say, Martinez versus Gould Campbell...
