Re: Happy Portday
The Port I’ve owned the longest is a bottle of Vesuvio 1989 I bought in 1994, so eight years later than Justin’s Sandeman 1966. I do recall working out of Belgrave House in Buckingham Palace Road in the 1980s, when the Lloyd’s crisis forced the Lloyd’s names to liquidate assets. Just round the corne...

Re: Porto this weekend
I’m trying to think what’s new since 2020. I stayed at the Lodge a few weeks ago. It was pleasant enough and Alexandra in the bar was keen to share what she knew and to learn more about Port. The 1756 restaurant has a good reputation, but I’ve not eaten there. I know someone who stayed a couple of n...

I’d rather do the GMs separately, not mixed in with the Graham vertical.
I think the list Martin has proposed is based on what has been offered to him. For example, no-one has offered a bottle of 1957 nor anything older than 1955.

Not seen this before, but that is an interesting bottle.
Julian has copies of lots of the historic Wine Society catalogues. He might be able to give some more details on it.

1982 Smith Woodhouse LBV
Bottle matured LBV, bottled in 1986 (as stated on the cork). Mature ruby red appearance, looking to be in early maturity; 50% opaque. Cherry cough drops on the nose, mixing sweet fruit with a touch of menthol. On the palate this is so impressive. Lively and light-footed, the fruit dances around the ...

Seckfords is easy to get to by train - it takes about 95 minutes from Liverpool Street. The warehouse is about a 10 minutes walk through a lovely riverside park from Melton train station. You could easily do it as quite a pleasant half day excursion. Assuming you were talking about the Bovington Tan...

Re: Thursday 11th April - Decanting Experiment plus some drinkers
W47 (JDAW) The Warre 1947 is high shoulder, bottler unknown (though it came from Alex B. , and it might be that a different bottle of the batch had a label). Was this one of the bottles from the parcel bought at Bonham's on 17 March 2009? With the white foil capsule? If so, I kept two bottles from ...

Re: Existential dilemma
None of us here have anything other than a minor, passing interest in an obscure red wine from a tiny part of a small country on the western fringes of Europe.
That is what I have consistently told my wife, and myself. I can stop any time I want to.

We decided to open red wine to go with our salmon steaks this evening.
By golly, this is astonishingly good mature claret at its absolute peak of perfection. Full of fruit, gentle of grip and hauntingly long.

IMG_6905.jpeg Croft 1977, decanted 4.5 hours. This is a Port in a lovely place at the moment. Glowing, polished ruby in colour and so expressive on the nose! The nose brings sweet cherry fruit, layered with mace and allspice, and so much more. Tobacco, aniseed and dried cranberry on the palate - br...

If I can, it will be a last minute decision — in which case I will order on the day.

Fonseca and Vesuvio both opened last night about 19.00, decanted this morning at 09.00 and will be returned to their bottles around 13.00 before I head into town.
I’ll aim to be at the B&F around 17.00 but might be half an hour earlier.

A Rare Wine on a Rare Date - Carcavelos back to 1906
Bottle line up.jpg On 29th February 2024, Jörg Lewerenz – the owner of Quinta da Corrieira in the Carcavelos wine region of Portugal – organised a remarkable tasting of a selection of 9 wines curated to show the historic and modern interpretations of this region. The history of Carcavelos is a long...

Julian would probably object. He hates us having too much Port.
Me, I just hate 1990s corks. Bloody Fonseca cork exploded into tiny fragments, even after being loosened with the JDAW cork impeller.
