Re: 2017 Douro Harvest

Interesting article and reply from Adrian. I know the discussion on irrigation is one which has been going for a while, but as far as I know the current rules forbid irrigation of port grapes once the vines have established themselves. But then Prats + Symington are a table wine producer and make on...

Re: International Launch of Taylor’s Rare Aged Tawny Port

The Krohn brand is not being killed off, as far as I am aware. In the UK, Krohn is represented by a separate agent to Taylor / Fonseca / Croft (which all come through Mentzendorff). The Krohn stocks of aged tawnies still in barrel are being commercialised under the Taylor name, but TFP have never ma...

Neither Monis nor Vergenoegd.

But it does start with the same letter as Monis.

Re: Tue 10 Oct - A Gould Campbell vertical

I would recommend leaving bottles at B&F and decanting on the day. Bottle seem to show better when we do this. I'll bring my bottles to the B&F on Sep 28th. I can spend a couple of hours at lunchtime decanting bottles which have been left in advance. That should be enough time to double-decant every...

Re: Thursday 28th September - Anyone Free?

What about "bring a container of port, or something a bit like port, to share with port-lovers"?

That way RLC can bring something brown and sticky, you and CSD can bring whatever you have, and the rest of us have free rein to choose whatever we want to bring.

Re: Good news if you fly BA Club...

Another week, another port. I confess, I am surprised at the fact that 5 days later the Taylor 2011 LBV has gone from the Terminal 3 BA lounge to be replaced by a bottle of Warre 2000 colheita and a bottle of Graham 6 Grapes. I had assumed that no-one drank the ports provided in the lounge and there...

2011 Taylor LBV

From a bottle in the BA Galleries Lounge in Heathrow Terminal 3. Deep ruby colour, 90% opaque. Harsh cherry nose, smelling sour and acidic. Acidity leads the entry with sour cherries dominating the fruit. Some pleasant sweet lavender on the late palate with faint tannins supporting everything. It gr...

Re: One quiz at a time

I did indeed buy a bottle of Boplaas. I bought a bottle of the 2013 Cape Vintage Reserve. I also bought bottles from Allesverloren, Vergelegen and Overgaauw.

So which producer did I taste when I was in SA?

Re: Volunteers sought..

An interesting question. I'll do my best to volunteer as you ask. I have a number of bottles which are likely to be cork tainted on my drinking list for next year so could well have the opportunity to prepare a bottle capable of testing the theory in a few years time.

Re: One quiz at a time

47 seconds!!

I believe that entitles me to post the next question.

I recently visited South Africa. During my time there I tasted only one producer's fortified wine but purchased bottles from 4 others.

Name the producer I tasted and (at least) one of the producers whose wine I purchased.

My notes indicate that it was the 1992 vintage. I have never tasted the 1982 vintage, nor have I ever seen DRT with half bottles of Warre Cavadinha 1982.

2002 Taylor Vargellas

Attractive mid-red colour, just picking up tones of brick; 50% opaque. Sous bois and brambles on the nose, sweet and fruity yet also a bit earthy. Earthy and slightly woody entry, the fruit is restrained at first with active tannins and sharp acidity. The fruit appears late but is overwhelmed by the...

1989 Quinta do Vesuvio

Drunk at the SQVP Night Tasting . Bottle 8972 bought from Lisbon duty free shop in April 1997. Modest and pale red colour, very light with an estimated opacity of around 20%. Smelly nose with a touch of bottle stink or perhaps fading bake. Whatever the cause, the wine smells a little medicinal. Nice...

1991 Taylor Vargellas

Drunk at the SQVP Night Tasting . Deep red with no bricking, but also with no signs of purple in the tone; 90% opaque. A slight touch of heat on a fresh dark fruited nose, inviting and promising to be tasty. Young and slightly aggressive on entry with lots of fruit and still a touch of lavender. Ple...

Drunk at the SQVP Night Tasting . Mature red colour with a wide rose coloured rim; 30% opaque. A lovely nose of warm damson fruit, very delicious. Quite mouthfilling on entry with lots of fruit and a balanced texture. A touch dry on the palate with some gentle tannins late on. Lot of lively rose and...

Drunk at the SQVP Night Tasting . Mid red colour, mature appearance; 50% opaque. Slightly medicinal nose bringing licorice and tobacco. Mid-weight entry, soft fruit followed by powerful acidity and a lot of peppercorn heat. The fruit is mature and slightly leathery with tannins that are very dry. Ge...

Drunk at the SQVP Night Tasting . From a bottle clearly labelled as Fonseca Guimaraens 1978, but sealed with a cork branded Fonseca Cruzeiro 1978 - could this have been a single quinta port? Mature in colour with a brick rim; quite light at 40% opaque. Pleasant on the nose, mixing spicy sandalwood w...

Thu 7 September 2017 - Single Quinta Ports

This was a great theme and made for a very enjoyable evening when even the monkey made a fool of himself and his ability to identify the port in his glass. It was great to be able to try a number of ports which I rarely drink and one from Ray which I've not tried before ( Terra Feita 1982 ). The Fon...
