2015 Vintage Review

I've tasted a fair range of vintage ports from the 2015 vintage and have had the opportunity to taste a number of them several times or over an extended period. My overall impression of the vintage is that is has produced a lot of very "pretty" ports. In the majority the fruit is delicate, clean and...

Tue 3rd Oct - Dinner at the Carlton Club

It was the birthday of member of TPF so a few of us decided to celebrate with dinner at the Carlton Club and take the opportunity to see what port they had on their wine list. We chose examples of most ports on the list and drank: Dow 1985 Graham 1970 Taylor 1985, first bottle Taylor 1985, second bo...

1985 Warre

Avalable from the Carlton Club @ £75 per bottle. Deep red colour, still opaque. Full of deep dark fruit on the palate, rich and powerful (which are not normally adjectives associated with Warre!). On the finish this is dominated by lots of black licorice. Very fine and very promising for 10 to 15 ye...

1985 Taylor

The second of two bottles. This was younger and darker than the frst bottle, with more intensity on the palate as a result. Better than the first bottle — really rather nice. 91/100. Drunk 03-Oct-17. Decanted 1 hour.

1985 Taylor

Available from the Carlton Club @ £95 per bottle. Mature appearance, 60% opaque. A great balance between fresh fruit and leathery secondar notes. Elegant and refined, a very tasty port. The first of two bottles. 89/100. Drunk 03-Oct-17. Decanted 1 hour.

1970 Graham

Available from the Carlton Club @ £150 per bottle. Mature appearance, brick red and 40% opaque. Balanced, mature and delicious with a lingering and very fine aftertaste and finish. Wonderful port. JDAW found spearmint on the mid-palate. This was Oporto bottled in very dark brown glass. 93/100. Drunk...

1985 Dow

Drunk at the Carlton Club. A poor bottle, spoiled by VA. Flat and tasting very strange. The sommelier advised that the bottles from this parcel were all similar. Not Rated. Drunk 03-Oct-17. Decanted 2 hours.

2018 Offline Summary

I thought that it might be of use to have a summary or index to past offlines and possible future offlines being organised through or attended by posters on TPF. With a single summary list it should be easier for people to see quickly whether there is an offline coming up that they would like to att...

Re: Royal Wedding, May 2018

The date for the wedding has been set as Saturday 19th May, perfect timing for us to toast the happy couple.

Should we offer the groom the opportunity to join us for his stag night?

Thursday 18th January 2018?

I'll be in London for the day on Thursday 18th January and would be happy to stay on for the evening if anyone else would like to meet up. If we do, it could be an opportunity to visit Bar Douro, Max Graham's Portuguese petiscos themed restaurant in Flat Iron Square. Max has offered to do us a deal ...

Re: Quinta do Noval Olive Oil

Enjoyed the two bottles we bought from you a few years back (a suspicious looking exchange at Waterloo Station). A bit grassy, but that only required discretion in its application. I agree with you about the grassy tone, but I've learnt to like the green note and find it adds to certain salads and ...

Re: Tuesday 19th December - 77@40

Please could somebody check the food order (my order being different to that in the thread, but hopefully only mine). That done, if it is correct, pls message Charles to send it to the B&F: we have orders from both menus, and should verify whether that is permitted. My food order is correct. I've n...

Assuming this is the same as discussed at the Calem tasting, then yes please to 6 for me.
It is the same. Most people asked me to reconfirm after the Calem tasting - something about not remembering too clearly after a bottle and a half of port.

Re: Place holder for June 6/7th Vintage with an '8' theme.

First post updated with the list of attendees, including JDAW and John Ireland. As a bit of lobbying for when you refine the theme, I'd like to do this tasting either wholly blind so no-one knows what we are tasting (I have some black sleeve bags we could use) or wholly sighted. Alternatively it cou...

Re: Royal Wedding, May 2018

Should we pick a date now, accepting the risk that it might be a little early or late. ¿Tuesday 22 nd May 2018? Not half term; currently free in my diary. The proposed date works. Re: What's the value?

You have two unusual bottles and it won't be easy to give you an idea of their value since they are so unusual. The first bottle is a vintage port from a producer who no longer exists - what is the word under and to the right of "DE MOOR"? The second bottle is of a port which has been aged in wood b...
