Re: BBR port walk 2017

Unfortunately CMAG is unwell and will not be attending the Port Walk. This means that I have a spare ticket. If anyone wants it, please let me know (preferably by email) before the end of Wednesday otherwise I will see whether BBR can resell it.

Alex is in. Mark my words. And a good thing too.
Only so I have the chance to drop off my bottle of Cockburn 1977 for the tasting in December.

Re: Coravin

Great advice and shared experience for anyone thinking of using a Coravin on tawny ports. Thanks for sharing your learnings.

And please say what you think of hte tawny ports you drink. It's always useful to hear what other people think about the range of tawny ports that are on the market.

Re: Wed 29th Nov 2017 - A Cálem (mini-)vertical

I'm not likely to know whether I can attend until the day before, or possibly on the Monday. However, I'd love to attend if I can since I have never tasted the Foz '58 or '80 or the Calem '83. Please make sure there is a spare space!

I'm unlikely to be available on either evening, but there is a very small possibility that I would be available on the 29th.

Re: Coravin

Art, The good news is that unless you are a very, very slow drinker you don't need to worry. Tawny ports are aged in barrels, which means they are exposed to oxygen as they age. This means that they do not deteriorate very quickly when opened and, in fact, are meant to be opened and drunk fairly soo...

Re: Thu 30 Nov 2017, Sandemans and 1970s (for the Placemat Software’s 15th anniversary)

With the absence of the Gandys, we have lost two-thirds of those of the intended attendees who were at the first use of the placemat software, fifteen years ago. {Expletives!} {Expletives!} {Expletives!} I now recall what happened. When this tasting was created the attempt to book a room was reject...

Re: 1970 Graham

With mature port I prefer hard white cheeses like Cheddar or Comte. I also really enjoy Jarlsberg, Gouda, Parmesan or emmental with mature port like Graham 1970. Depending on where you are in the country, we might be able to offer some much more local choices of white cheese. Where I live, St Bartho...

Re: Thu 30 Nov 2017, Sandemans and 1970s (for the Placemat Software’s 15th anniversary)

Best bet would be to try other Davy's branches where we might be known. Alternatives include: A table in the open area at the B&F - not ideal but perfectly acceptable. We could try for a table at one of the branches of Hawksmoor , although we'd have to pay corkage unless we moved to a Monday night. ...

Re: Upgrade of Forum Software

Is there a reason we have the TPF logo showing three times in the top left corner of the screen? I can't imagine this is related to the software upgrade, but I don't recall having seen in triplicate before.

Or have I just had too much port?

Base of neck fill. A lovely brick red colour, glwoing in its purity, 50% opaque. Dusty bruised raspberries on the nose, sweet and with a delicious peppercorn spicing things up. The spice comes through on the palate, which is sweet yet with enough acidity to keep the sweetness in check. A lovely thic...

By the glass from the Boot & Flogger. Deep red, quite youthful with an opaque centre. Slight stink on the nose with quite a lot of alcohol showing. On the palate the stink shows through as a dirty tone to the fruit. Very hot and peppery on the palate with modest tannins providing some dry grip. Bitt...
