Re: Graham's 1977 Vintage Port

I agree with Andy on this, as I'm familiar with the wine and wouldn't put money on Graham 77 rather than Graham 80 or 85 (or even 83). For the right price, i'd be interested in cellar defenders (low cost port that I drink before the high cost port). All that said, it makes folks like me poor candida...

Re: Graham's 1977 Vintage Port

Have you opened the case to assess their condition? Are there any signs of leakage, are any of the selo tags (the white tags that emerge from under the black capsule) showing red stains? Have they been in the house since they were purchased, and were they stored by the furnace or somewhere cooler? D...

Re: Third time is the charm - History in the making

.... Also no Gould Campbell and no Smith Woodhouse, but for other (more dire) reasons. The no Gould Campbell was certainly an other more dire reason. Smith Woodhouse not so dire I thought - that brand still lives on in the SFE portfolio. They made a SW16 so hopefully you are correct. FWIW GC also s...

Re: Seeking input on bottle of 1927 vintage Port

Wasn't Prohibition 1920-1933? So this wouldn't have been imported then, and the labeling just doesn't strike me as "of the era." That said, maybe worth picking up and NY/NJ crew adds it as an oddity to the next gathering?

EJINPA -- where in PA? I'm in NJ.

Re: Delaforce 1980 & Grahams 1983 cases for sale [with pics]

Given the honest disclosure of storage, you may have a challenging time selling the wine, and probably for good reason (nobody likes to open a bottle and find it spoilt). What you could fetch for the wine is significantly depreciated as a result. Unless, it's not spoilt. Might I suggest finding a re...

Re: Portal 10 Yr Old Aged White Port

Portal's 10 Yr Old Aged White Port is a lovely easy-drinker. Pale caramel color with a candied nose, good caramel, toasted marshmallow, and oak flavor. Fruit is nondescript but present, the tail is long, and the alcohol is balanced against the sugars to avoid the long burn. 92. Tasted during the Ves...

Re: Wed 1 March 2019 - The Eastern seaboard Vesuvio Box tasting

Overall, I quite enjoyed the opportunity to try a range of maturing Quinta do Vesuvios, but also learned that I don't appreciate their flavor profile. I like the black pepper, licorice, and tobacco flavors when they emerge, and enjoyed the occasional surprising nose, but overall i found them too har...

Re: 1997 Vesuvio

Vesuvio 1997's nose some of the smokey interest of its 91 uncle, but in the mouth it switches nicely to pepper and cherries. It's still pretty tightly wound, and that makes for a harsher flavor. Has the Vesuvio "bite." Overall it's just too young, could use at least another 5 years. 92.

Re: 1996 Vesuvio

Vesuvio 1996 is a bit green in the nose, but spicy and with a distinct cinammon note. In the mouth, there's smoke, black pepper, and a little bit of rooty flavor, with a fruit base that isn't as dominating as its peers. 92.

Re: 1995 Vesuvio

Vesuvio 1995 was green on the nose (and this one had bottlestink at opening), but in the mouth it was Nice -- not blown away, it was musty early then the fruit came forward as the must faded. Again it has the Vesuvio "bite". 90.

(I liked the 92 & 96 better)

Re: 1994 Vesuvio

Vesuvio 1994 starts with a tight, closed nose, and is likewise spciy and closed in the mouth. But it has excellent mouthfeel, the tannins are still working their way into the wine, and there's a solid fruit foundation. Overall, very good balance and even progression -- while I enjoyed it as "one of ...

Re: 1992 Vesuvio

Vesuvio 1992 comes in with a huge black pepper nose (though this bottle started with a lot of bottle stink), in the mouth that carries through to black pepper and spices, and a clear note of tobacco, on a backdrop of dark fruits. The vesuvio "bite" is present but not overwhelming. 92.

Re: 1991 Vesuvio

Fabulous nose on the Vesuvio 1991 -- smoke and vegetation and fruit, bold and intriguing. Shame that "fabulous" didn't carry through to the mouth, where it tastes like it smells: smoke, celery, red bell pepper and a bit of cherry. 92 for its nose, 88 overall.

Re: 1990 Vesuvio

Vesivio 1990 is tight and acidic nose, with a strong licorice note. In the mouth it is a pontefract cake -- Licorice oil and Molasses throughout the early & mid palate. Way too long of a burn in the back, and the familiar vesuvio "bite" on the tongue. 90.

Re: 1989 Vesuvio

Light color on the Vesuvio 1989, with a musty, celery nose that others aptly described as plastic or chinese [medicinal] root. In the mouth, it feels almost effervescent on the tongue, with too much bite up front and too much burn long into the tail. Vegetal and ashtray flavors -- this is an interes...
