Re: A market for fakes?
Fortunately, your bottle looks exactly like it should. While there have been incidences (v. rare though) of inexpensive bottles being counterfeited, this is not one of them. Some see conspiracy theories with every bottle they view or someone else purchases. While we all hate when that does happen, a...

Re: How to spell "Port"
Glenn is correct, that somewhere in the late 1980's I was tired of Americans using both "port" and "vintage port" and the rest of my life to this date I have been using Port and Vintage Port and did a thread about this on FTLOP many years back and even questioned why the Port tra...

Re: Software that makes placemats
Because I don't view a piece of paper lying on a table with circles on it as having a "top and bottom" as you do. For me, the top is where the glasses are placed, the bottom faces down to the table cloth. For me, I call what you consider the bottom of the page, "the front"...

Re: Software that makes placemats
I was not intimating that Glenn learned from me, just that he's picked this stuff up in a rather short period of years, overall. As to reasons, since it seems that Julian is all about learning the "why" ... here are three of many good reason to explain my point above. a. the winemaker/jour...

Re: Software that makes placemats
Having consumed wines during judging competitions and at trade and personal events for more than 3 decades now; old habits die hard.
Glenn has learned well, in a fairly short period of years
With VP and in any vertical of wines, I've always preferred oldest to youngest for numerous reasons.

Re: Software that makes placemats
Daniel, I do an occasional tasting of Port and/or Madeira and my format never changes. As I am a techno-failure, Glenn typically helps me to organize and print out the placemats using the brilliant software that has been designed and upgraded by Julian. I prefer and always do, have the line of wine ...

Re: 2011 Declarations
I'll ignore g-man's comment, as I clearly stated where my info came from regardless if he thinks it flies in the face of other people's stated opinions here. Now more to the real point, Andy's assertion. Since 2004, in articles I've had published (a full decade ago) I have been on record saying that...

Re: 2011 Declarations
The Nacional vineyard was replanted in 1925 and the 1931 Nacional was made from six year old vines. Rute and others have mentioned the vines nowadays average 35 years of age.

Re: For the love of port website

Some cool new features including a collaboration with one of the key Port enthusiasts on this Forum. For those with the nice comments above, if...

Re: Oldest bottles
In documents I've read and discussions I've been a part of, 1820 has been the date most often mentioned for the broad practice of fortification with Port wine. As for oldest bottles tasted: 1802 Colheita, 1815 for Vintage Port and 1748 for Madeira. This year I was a shown a true 1756 Vintage Port. M...

Re: Oporto Restaurant - Canelas de Coelho
A nice tapas style restaurant with small dishes and very solid food. I've eaten here a bunch and pricing is good for food and somewhat reasonable for wine explorations. Service runs from friendly/professional to absolutely amateur hour. That being said, even the off nights were still pleasant.

Re: Taylor Single Harvest Tawny 1964
To be entirely fair... The family knew what the deal was in selling to TFP, I'm sure. They accepted that W&K would no longer be the brand on the bottle. Taylor paid for the stock, not the name. This must have been clear to all who signed on the dotted line.. Pure speculation. Knowing the two ke...

To add some facts to the discussion, before venturing back into my opinion too: Shortly, some of the W&K Colheitas that are currently available and at reasonable prices are going to be removed from the market. Not because of scarcity / stocks running low, but with intent. The bottles that are al...

Re: Port and Marketing: "Best Vintage ever"
Thank you Owen and Daniel. Sorry for rankling feathers above. Keeping it light now, no reason to point fingers at some of the hyperbole aimed at 2011, inaccurately or not. Agreed that discussions by those who do not get to taste cask samples are still valid. My intent above was not mean spirited, bu...
