Re: My way towards my first vintage

Hahaha how do you know that I bought a few more bottles?? ;) I bought 3 or 4 bottles of Dows, mainly 1994 and 2003. :)

Re: My way towards my first vintage

Yes I did SIR. The first bottle was not disgusting at all, but sadly it was flat. It was somehow powerless, even after a 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours of breathing. It gave me the feeling that it tasted like 10 to 20% of what was the good bottle. I ended up being reimbursed, since I bought the bottle only ...

Re: Replacing corks

Are you saying that some corks in VP bottles are longer than in regular bottles?

Does it mean that nobody here ever changed the corks of their VP?

Re: Latest buy

I'm 31, with no children yet, and I already planned on leaving a few VP bottles for my future kids as well! :) As much as I like your tradition in England to buy a VP and give it to your kids when they reach 21 or any important life event such as weddings and graduations. Strangely, this is somethin...

Replacing corks

I am curious, what makes you believe that it is time to change some corks on old VP?

And when it happens, how is it done?

Re: Port bottle leaked? Still drinkable?

Hahaha, well when it comes time to spend a few hundred dollars, I can definitely see why we should be more cautious! And trust, I will be from now on!! In fact, I already gave the trick to a friend who sells wine ;)

Re: Port bottle leaked? Still drinkable?

Good point. I'll definitely bring a flashlight next time. As for the refund, it might be more complicated than I estimated. They currently want to send the bottle to their main center, to analyse it's content. On the other hand, I'm trying to prove two points: 1) the bottle was damaged (leaking cork...

Re: Port bottle leaked? Still drinkable?

Hahahaha I agree with the past 10 years! The comparison with a good G70 really made me feel like the leaked one was a pale 10% of the good bottle. Therefore, since I bought the bottles only 2 weeks ago from a governmental seller, I'll go get a refund! To tell you the truth, a 10 years old tawny woul...

Re: Port bottle leaked? Still drinkable?

I believe VP is an interesting world, nonetheless! I never expected to live such experience, especially when it comes to my very first bottle. Hopefully I won't live that experience too often, especially since the leaked bottle didn't become better after 24hours of breathing!

your first vintage?

I am curious. When did you taste your first port vintage? How old were you? How did you feel, what was the reason for opening such bottle? Did you get addicted right away?

Re: My way towards my first vintage

Then, Billy shared his opinion. He said it started with grapes, then prunes, dried dates. I guess I wasn't too far from the dark fruits I couldn't name. He also added in a 3rd row caramelized orange, cacao and hints of coffee. To be honest, I never smelled the coffee! Finally, as my anxiety finally ...

Re: My way towards my first vintage

My right eye was always spying on Billy, my sommelier friend who's usually very vocal. But he wasn't at that moment. While my nose was taking big breaths of the port, as smelling is always a very enjoyable part of drinking good alcohols for me, I was staring at Billy wondering what was going on in h...

Re: My way towards my first vintage

Then, one by one, my friends got to my house for dinner. Without telling them what I saved somewhere in the basement, I always had a special thought about my fabulous port! After 5 hours and a half of decanting, I got upstairs with something in my hands. My friends, who knew me for a while already, ...

Re: My way towards my first vintage

Then, a strange thing happened to me. I started wandering around the decanter, smelling it every 5 to 10 minutes for the next few hours. I looked like a hobbit in love with his precious ring of invisibility! It was like I felt attracted by the fortified wine. Always wondering if it would smell bette...

Re: My way towards my first vintage

The next steps was pouring the port into the decanter, which went smoothly. No, I didn't answer about any calls while pouring it in, to avoid any more chaos into the wine. The sediments and remaining cork parts in it was enough, I didn't want to disturb it more, you can trust me!
