Re: Port for sale by retailer

Justin K you are not alone, ASDA has form regarding such offers. I have just, for the third time, tried to place a mainland order for the Dow Crusted and the Cockburns LBV at £10.00 and once again got as far the checkout only to be advised "Items are not available or de-listed"!  Maybe som...

2000 Sainsbury

2000 Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Bottled by Symington. First bottle was corked; not a good start especially as it was a birthday treat.  However, thankfully the second of the gifted bottles was enjoyed by all and saved the day. Dark purple and 90% opaque. Dry herbs on the nose and in the mouth...

2010 Sandeman LBV

Unfiltered and bottled in 2014. Very dark ruby almost black. Ripe black fruits and chocolate were the most dominant aromas with hints of mint and pepper. Full bodied with medium heat and a long finish.  I'm still relatively new to this lark but from the notes of my first tasting of this wine in 2016...

NV Waitrose Crusted 2015

2015 Waitrose & Symington Crusted Except for a whiff of paraffin on the nose, a first for me, sadly no other aromas were apparent. 90% opaque. Silky with a little acidity on the palate. Strangely flavours were difficult to determine - a little like a lunchtime plonk bought to accompany a snack ...

Re: Port for sale by retailer

ASDA have advertised Crusted Port for a considerable time but only once have I found it in the stores I've visited. For many months I have occasionally attempted to order on-line but on each occasion I’ve been stopped in the ordering process - usually after inputting my post code or signing into my ...

Re: 1986 Taylor Quinta de Vargellas

Tasting note update. Thank you for the "Vargellas spirit" comment Andy. I saved two glasses to taste on the second day - No "burnt out alternator" in fact almost no nose; 90% of the "significant heat" had disappeared and that which was noticeable on the palate rapidly d...

1986 Taylor Vargellas

75% opaque. In addition to violets there was very faint acrid smoke on the nose - it took ages to recall it was reminiscent of a burnt out alternator, thankfully it didn’t translate into an unpleasant taste. A delicate mid sweet wine showing red fruit flavours, the most predominant of which was pome...

Re: Krohn's LBV Port

Hi Dennis, I'm relatively new to this lark and have only consumed one bottle, a 2011. However, you will find my tasting note here:- http://www.theportforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=11230 I usually find even a slight hint of caramel very noticeable and having enjoyed (too) many slices of pecan pie...

Re: Book or Bottle Holiday Present Suggestion

In trying to arrive at an answer to your question it wasn't until I tried putting myself in your father's shoes that I suddenly realised if you don't know what he may like how on earth would I or any other stranger know. What I do know is that from a loving child, who clearly wishes to please ones f...

Re: Musings of a novice ..........

Thank you both for the greeting and ideas. I have yet to taste my original bottle of 2011 Sandeman L B V. However, the idea of monitoring the progress of an "unresolved" wine overtime appeals greatly and is far too interesting to resist - all I need now is the patience not to open the addi...

2011 Royal Oporto Carvalhas LBV

Deep purple with a baffling aroma which was made even more confusing because I had just used a different hand wash - another lesson learnt. It will most probably be immediately apparent to those of a botanical bent or of a certain faith but for me cistus was a first. Cocoa also noticeable. Oily in t...

2011 Burmester LBV

A dense substantial wine, in no way delicate and with little fruit showing. Initially medium heat on the attack, a dominant cocoa taste tending towards mild bitterness on the palate and a finish that was too earthy, it didn't linger pleasantly. By the second and third day the mild heat had died away...

2011 Quinta da Revolta LBV

Revolta by name and sadly this bottle was revolta by nature, well it certainly caused an upheaval. Medium ruby colour. No cork taint but a faint stale stink mixed with a mild aroma of raisins. On the attack and mid palate it was bitter with a distinct green edge combined with mild heat and a hint of...

2011 Maynard LBV

Wow! What a heavyweight and a powerful mouthful. Dark red in colour. Aromatic, stewed plums and mild earthy aromas. On the palate a mix of dark chocolate, black tea and a hint of pepper, the latter not harsh but reminiscent of a light pepper crust on a juicy steak. On day's two and three black tea m...

Garnet side of purple. Vague aroma of sweet plums. Mild heat with blackberry and some spice mid palate. On subsequent days the flavours unfolded and the wine became a tad drier, smoother and more interesting. Incredible value and a serious alternative should our current favourite special reserve bec...

2011 Krohn LBV

Deep red with a strong inviting aroma of juicy black plums and an underlying but vague mystery 'dental' aroma - not unpleasant and somewhat reminicisent of a dried herb I couldn't recall. After sipping three glasses, on the trot, I decided discretion was the better part of valour and beat a retreat....

Musings of a novice ..........

How best to simply summarise my trek to date around the port learning curve? Well, with a nod to Yeats - 'port is full of magical things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper'. I seriously considered ending this post here. Given the last comment it would be tedious to detail a litany of ...

Re: Hello from Surrey

Hi LGTrotter and Benread, Many thanks for both your welcome and encouragement. I am confident that my quest will eventually encompass Tawny, in fact recently all the marketing brouhaha for Warre's Otima induced me to 'stray from my path' and buy a 10 year old. I thought it would be worth trying beca...

Hello from Surrey

I have been having fun making a most enjoyable and interesting personal study of port. For most of my life I just gratefully accepted glasses of port at appropriate times; some have been great, some awful and most somewhere in-between. However, a coincidence of events sparked my interest to the exte...
